* To slice meat into thin strips, as for Chinese dishes - partially freeze and it will slice easily.

* A roast with the bone in will cook faster than a boneless roast - the bone carries the heat to the inside of the roast quicker.

* For a juicer hamburger add cold water to the beef before grilling (1/2 cup to 1 pound of meat).

* To keep cauliflower white while cooking - add a little milk to the water.

* Let raw potatoes stand in cold water for at least half an hour before frying to improve the crispness of french-fried potatoes.

* Buy mushrooms before they "open." When stems and caps are attached snugly, mushrooms are truly fresh.

* Lettuce keeps better if you store in refrigerator without washing first so that the leaves are dry. Wash the day you are going to use.

* Do not use metal bowls when mixing salads. Use wooden, glass or china.

* A Perfect Pastry Crust? In your favorite recipe, substitute a 4:1 ratio of lard:butter.

* To make your own corn meal mix: combine 1 cup corn meal, 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 4 teaspoons baking powder. You can store it in a tightly covered container for
up to 6 months.

* It's important to let a roast -- beef, pork, lamb or poultry -- sit a little while before carving. That allows the juices to retreat back into the meat. If you carve a roast too soon,
much of its goodness will spill out onto the carving board.

* Microwave a lemon for 15 seconds and double the juice you get before squeezing.

* Microwave garlic cloves for 15 seconds and the skins slip right off.

* When slicing a hard boiled egg, try wetting the knife just before cutting. If that doesn't do the trick, try applying a bit of cooking spray to the edge.

* Rescue stale or soggy chips and crackers: Preheat the oven to 300F. Spread the chips or crackers in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for about 5 minutes. Allow to cool,
then seal in a plastic bag or container.

* The best way to store fresh celery is to wrap it in aluminum foil and put it in the refrigerator--it will keep for weeks.

* Store freshly cut basil on your kitchen counter in a glass with the water level covering only the stems. Change the water occasionally. It will keep for weeks this way, even develop roots! Basil hates to be cold, so NEVER put it in the refrigerator. Also, regular cutting encourages
new growth and healthier plants.

* A dampened paper towel or terry cloth brushed downward on a cob of corn will remove every strand of corn silk.

* Fresh eggs' shells are rough and chalky; old eggs are smooth and shiny.

* No "curly" bacon for breakfast when you dip it into cold water before frying.

* When working with dough, don't flour your hands; coat them with olive oil to prevent sticking.

* Use a gentle touch when shaping ground beef patties. Overhandling will result in a firm, compact texture after cooking. Don't press or flatten with spatula during cooking.

* Never heat pesto sauce - the basil will turn black and taste bitter.

* Butter pie pastry scraps: sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, and bake like cookies.

* A jar lid or a couple of marbles in the bottom half of a double-boiler will rattle when the water gets low and warn you to add more before the pan scorches or burns.

* When mincing garlic, sprinkle on a little salt so the pieces won't stick to your knife or cutting board.

* If your cake recipe calls for nuts, heat them first in the oven, then dust with flour before adding to the batter to keep them from settling to the bottom of the pan.

* Noodles, spaghetti and other starches won't boil over if you rub the inside of the pot with vegetable oil.

* Brown gravy in a hurry with a bit of instant coffee straight from the jar... no bitter taste, either.

* To hasten the cooking of foods in a double boiler, add salt to the water in the outer boiler.

* Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to prevent ice cream drips.

* To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.

* Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away.

* Don't throw out all that leftover wine: Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.

* If you have a problem opening jars: Try using latex dishwashing gloves. They give a on-slip grip that makes opening jars easy.

* Add a little lemon and lime to tuna to add zest and flavor to tuna sandwiches. Use cucumbers soaked in vinegar and pepper in sandwich instead of tomatoes. Use mustard instead of mayo to cut the fat and add a tang.

* Instead of the water your recipe calls for, try juices, bouillon, or water you've cooked vegetables in. Instead of milk, try buttermilk, yogurt or sour cream. It can add a whole new flavor and improve nutrition.

* Steak Sauce With A Kick: Deglaze your frying pan (after searing your New York steaks) with brandy. Add two tablespoons of butter, a little white wine and a splash of Grand Marnier. Serve over steaks - you'll never use steak sauce again.

* When browning ground meat, brown several pounds and drain. Divide evenly in freezer containers and freeze. Unthaw in microwave for quick fixing next time.

* Ground spices really should be replaced every 6 months or so! Unless you know you will use them up fairly quickly, buy a bottle in partnership with a friend and split the contents. You'll each benefit from fresh spices.

* Sunlight doesn't ripen tomatoes, warmth does. Store tomatoes with stems pointed down and they will stay fresher, longer.

* Place green fruits in a perforated plastic bag. The holes will allow air to circulate while retaining the ethylene gas that fruits produce during ripening.

* Marshmallows won't dry out when frozen.

* Poke a hole in the middle of the hamburger patties while shaping them. The burgers will cook faster and the holes will disappear when done.

* For fluffier, whiter rice, add one teaspoon of lemon juice per quart of water. To add extra flavor and nutrition to rice, cook it in liquid reserved from cooking vegetables.

* Cheese won't harden if you butter the exposed edges before storing.

* Sausage patties rolled in flour before frying won't crack open during cooking.

* Two drops of yellow food coloring added to boiling noodles will make them look homemade.

* When separating eggs, break them into a funnel. The whites will go through leaving the yolk intact in the funnel.

* Fresh fish freeze well in a milk carton filled with water.

* Make your own celery flakes. Just cut and wash the leaves from the celery stalks; place them in the oven on low heat or in the hot sun until thoroughly dry. Crumble and store in an air-tight container.

* When picking a melon, smell it for freshness and ripeness. Check to see that the fruit is heavy in weight and that the spot on the end where it has been plucked from the vine is soft.

* When tossing a salad with a basic vinaigrette, always make the vinaigrette at least 1/2 hour ahead of time and let the mixture sit to allow the flavors to marry. Pour the vinaigrette down
the side of the bowl, not directly on the greens, for a more evenly dressed salad.

* For the perfect boiled egg, cover eggs with cold water and a pinch of salt. Bring the water to a full boil. Remove the pan from the heat and cover. Let the eggs sit for 8-9 minutes. Drain the water and place the eggs in ice water to cool to stop the cooking process.

* When braising meat, cook it at a low temperature for a long time to keep the meat tender and have it retain all the juices.

* When cooking any kind of strawberry dessert, add a splash of aged Balsamic vinegar to the recipe to enhance the flavor of the strawberries.

* For fresh flavor in orange juice add the juice of one lemon.

* Tenderize pot roast or stewing meat by using two cups of hot tea as a cooking liquid.

* When making roux for a recipe, make extra and keep in the refrigerator for future use.

* Chefs pound meat not to tenderize the meat, but to help even the meat so it cooks evenly.

* To remove egg shells from a batter, use the remaining shell to attract the piece.

* If a recipe calls for 1 cup sour cream, you may substitute 1 cup cottage cheese blended until smooth with 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1/3 cup buttermilk.

* When using fresh herbs such as dill, chives, parsley, etc., hold them together in small bunches and snip with kitchen scissors. It is a lot faster this way, and you'll find the herbs will be light and fluffy, not bruised and wet as they often get when chopped.

* When going on a picnic, keep sandwiches from becoming soggy by packing lettuce and condiments in separate containers. Add them to sandwiches just before serving.

* Maple-flavored syrup, commonly found on the shelves in the store and in restaurants, is actually corn syrup flavored with a bit of pure maple syrup to keep the cost down.

* Thaw fish in milk for fresher flavor

* Put meat used for stir frying in freezer for 45 min. to 1 hr. to make
slicing easier.

* You can correct greasy gravy by adding a little baking soda to it.

* If you need only 1/2 an onion, save the root half. It will last longer.

* Keep popcorn fresh and encourage more kernels to pop by storing in the freezer.

* Lemons stored in a sealed jar of water will produce twice the juice.

* Use paper bags rather than plastic to store lettuce and celery in the crisper. They will stay fresh longer.

* Bread will stay fresh longer if a celery rib is stored with it in the package.

* Save butter wrappers in the freezer to use for greasing pans when baking.

* To keep salt from clogging in the shaker, add 1/2 teaspoon of uncooked rice.

* If guests are coming and you're behind making dinner, throw some onions on to saute and your kitchen will smell wonderful and homey.

* Egg whites should always be at room temperature before whipping. Be certain there is no yolk in the whites and that the bowl and beaters are perfectly clean. Cream, on the other hand, should be well-chilled. For the largest volume, chill the bowl and beaters before whipping.

* When using spaghetti, keep in mind that 8 ounces of uncooked pasta makes 4 cups cooked.

* When using all-purpose flour, keep in mind that one pound flour is the equivalent to 4 cups.

* When using dried beans and peas, keep in mind that 1 cup dry beans or peas makes 2 1/2 cups cooked.

* When using rice, keep in mind that 1 cup of uncooked long-grain white rice makes 3 cups cooked.

* When using granulated sugar, keep in mind that one pound sugar is the equivalent to 2 cups.

* Ultimate Disposable Pastry Bag:
Take a heavy-duty zipper-seal plastic bag and snip off one corner, making a slightly curved cut. Using a standard two-piece plastic coupler (available wherever cake decorating supplies are sold), insert the larger piece into the hole. Choose a tip and secure it with the coupler's ring. Fill the bag and zip the top closed. Decorate away, then remove the coupler/tip assembly and toss the bag. No messy cleanup!

* One way to preserve the flavor of fresh herbs is to make herb butter. Let the butter soften, then add finely chopped herbs in any combination, abbout 2 to 4 tablespoons per stick of butter. The butter freezes well, and you can serve it spread on French bread or with seafood or chicken.

* Pancakes are lighter and fluffier when you substitute club soda for milk in the batter.

* Before opening a package of bacon, roll it. This helps separate the slices for easy removal of individual slices.

* Drain deep fried foods on brown paper grocery bags as opposed to paper towels to retain crispness.

* Whenever possible, warm your dinner plates slightly in the oven before serving so the meal stays a little bit hotter.

* To make lighter and fluffier mashed potatoes, add a pinch or two of baking powder to the potatoes before whipping.

* Cookies will spread if your dough is too pliable by allowing butter to get too soft. If your cookies are spreading too much, try refrigerating the dough for a couple of hours before baking.

* Cookie dough can be frozen up to three months in an airtight container or refrigerated three to four days.

* Check cookies at minimum baking time.

* Let cookies cool completely before storing. Store different types of cookies in separate containers so they'll keep their original flavor and texture.

* Marinate red meats in wine to tenderize.

* Marinate chicken in buttermilk to tenderize.

* A simple way to sharpen kitchen shears: cut a piece of steel wool.

* Don't just keep dental floss in your medicine cabinet. Keep some in the kitchen. It's a great tool. Unflavored dental floss is often better than a& knife to cleanly cut all kinds of soft foods,
soft cheese, rolled dough, layered cake and cheesecake.

* If lettuce starts turning a little brown (but not slimy) it may not be suitable for salads, but it is for sauteing. Sauteed salad greens like lettuce, radicchio, and endive make an unusual but tasty side dish. Saute lettuces just as you would spinach. Cook them quickly in a little olive oil, minced garlic, and salt. They taste great, and you cant tell that the greens were once a little brown.

Many advertisers I know and have read in forums do not use the Google AdWords content network to advertise their site. The reason they say is poor quality of traffic. Well no more.

Google has recently improved its content network. Read more about this in their blog.

I will not dwell into what improvements were made by Google as you can read in the blog, what I will write here is how to get the best out of Google AdWords content network targeting.

1. Distribution of Keywords is important: The Keywords are very important as all the keywords in an AdGroup will form a theme and all those websites that “fit” into that theme will be eligible to display your Ad.

How to tackle this?

Paste your keywords in a spreadsheet. Let’s name it Sheet1. In another sheet (Sheet2) let the first row of every column represent the name of the product. Go back to Sheet1. Copy the first keyword, go to Sheet2 and paste it in the appropriate column representing the product. Do the same for the second keyword. Repeat this until you have pasted all the keywords from Sheet1 to Sheet2.

I can understand this is a cumbersome work, but it will surly pay dividends in the long run.

By doing this what you have done is distributed the keywords to represent different products. This will help Google to show your ad in only those websites that sell similar product and no other website.

Needless to say, these different columns should represent different AdGroups in your Adwords Campaign.

Why this is important? Lets suppose you sell blue and black widgets. Since you have separated your adgroups representing blue and black, the blue widget ad will not show in a site selling black widget and vice versa.

This way you will get highly targeted visitors.

2. Let content targeting be content targeting: Let the content network targeting campaign target the Google content network only. Its advisable that you opt out of the search network when you are targeting content network.

Why? Because a different mindset of people will be looking at your ads. These are the people who are not searching for your product but looking for more information on your or similar product.

3. Try a different landing page: See point 2 above. Since visitors coming from the content network are looking for more information, its better to first provide them the information of your product. Its common sense that this page has to be optimized differently than the page where visitors are coming from the search network.

4. Track everything: It’s important to track traffic coming from the content network. (Infact it’s important to track all visitors coming from whatever sources.)

Tracking will help you to study the behavior of your content ad visitors and implement changes accordingly.

5. No dynamic insertion of keywords in ads: Since ad shown is not keyword specific but theme specific, it is of no use if you create an ad with dynamic insertion of keywords.

Google will show default text of the ad in the content network if dynamic insertion has been used.

6. Test your ads: Don’t just sleep over your ads. Though the CTR of the Google content network does not effect quality score of the search network ads, its important that you keep testing your ads to get the best possible CTR for your content network ads as well.

7. Negative keywords: Just like the search network its important that you use negative keywords smartly. You don’t want people looking for free stuff see your ads. Do you?

Remember that content targeting also helps in brand building. So sometimes it makes sense to keep advertising in the content network especially if you want to build a brand. It will help in the long run.

A variety of sources provides us with a body of fairly reliable knowledge about adult learning. This knowledge might be divided into three basic divisions: things we know about adult learners and their motivation, things we know about designing curriculum for adults, and things we know about working with adults in the classroom.

Motivation to Learn

Adults seek out learning experiences in order to cope with specific life-changing events--e.g., marriage, divorce, a new job, a promotion, being fired, retiring, losing a loved one, moving to a new city.
The more life change events an adult encounters, the more likely he or she is to seek out learning opportunities. Just as stress increases as life-change events accumulate, the motivation to cope with change through engagement in a learning experience increases.
The learning experiences adults seek out on their own are directly related - at least in their perception - to the life-change events that triggered the seeking.
Adults are generally willing to engage in learning experiences before, after, or even during the actual life change event. Once convinced that the change is a certainty, adults will engage in any learning that promises to help them cope with the transition.
Adults who are motivated to seek out a learning experience do so primarily because they have a use for the knowledge or skill being sought. Learning is a means to an end, not an end in itself.
Increasing or maintaining one's sense of self-esteem and pleasure are strong secondary motivators for engaging in learning experiences.

Curriculum Design

Adult learners tend to be less interested in, and enthralled by, survey courses. They tend to prefer single concept, single-theory courses that focus heavily on the application of the concept to relevant problems. This tendency increases with age.
Adults need to be able to integrate new ideas with what they already know if they are going to keep - and use - the new information.
Information that conflicts sharply with what is already held to be true, and thus forces a re-evaluation of the old material, is integrated more slowly.
Information that has little "conceptual overlap" with what is already known is acquired slowly.
Fast-paced, complex or unusual learning tasks interfere with the learning of the concepts or data they are intended to teach or illustrate.
Adults tend to compensate for being slower in some psychomotor learning tasks by being more accurate and making fewer trial-and-error ventures.
Adults tend to take errors personally and are more likely to let them affect self-esteem. Therefore, they tend to apply tried-and-true solutions and take fewer risks.
The curriculum designer must know whether the concepts or ideas will be in concert or in conflict with the learner. Some instruction must be designed to effect a change in belief and value systems.
Programs need to be designed to accept viewpoints from people in different life stages and with different value "sets."
A concept needs to be "anchored" or explained from more than one value set and appeal to more than one developmental life stage.
Adults prefer self-directed and self-designed learning projects over group-learning experiences led by a professional, they select more than one medium for learning, and they desire to control pace and start/stop time.
Nonhuman media such as books, programmed instruction and television have become popular with adults in recent years.
Regardless of media, straightforward how-to is the preferred content orientation. Adults cite a need for application and how-to information as the primary motivation for beginning a learning project.
Self-direction does not mean isolation. Studies of self-directed learning indicate that self-directed projects involve an average of 10 other people as resources, guides, encouragers and the like. But even for the self-professed, self-directed learner, lectures and short seminars get positive ratings, especially when these events give the learner face-to-face, one-to-one access to an expert.

In the Classroom

The learning environment must be physically and psychologically comfortable; long lectures, periods of interminable sitting and the absence of practice opportunities rate high on the irritation scale.
Adults have something real to lose in a classroom situation. Self-esteem and ego are on the line when they are asked to risk trying a new behavior in front of peers and cohorts. Bad experiences in traditional education, feelings about authority and the preoccupation with events outside the classroom affect in-class experience.
Adults have expectations, and it is critical to take time early on to clarify and articulate all expectations before getting into content. The instructor can assume responsibility only for his or her own expectations, not for those of students.
Adults bring a great deal of life experience into the classroom, an invaluable asset to be acknowledged, tapped and used. Adults can learn well -and much - from dialogue with respected peers.
Instructors who have a tendency to hold forth rather than facilitate can hold that tendency in check--or compensate for it--by concentrating on the use of open-ended questions to draw out relevant student knowledge and experience.
New knowledge has to be integrated with previous knowledge; students must actively participate in the learning experience. The learner is dependent on the instructor for confirming feedback on skill practice; the instructor is dependent on the learner for feedback about curriculum and in-class performance.
The key to the instructor role is control. The instructor must balance the presentation of new material, debate and discussion, sharing of relevant student experiences, and the clock. Ironically, it seems that instructors are best able to establish control when they risk giving it up. When they shelve egos and stifle the tendency to be threatened by challenge to plans and methods, they gain the kind of facilitative control needed to effect adult learning.
The instructor has to protect minority opinion, keep disagreements civil and unheated, make connections between various opinions and ideas, and keep reminding the group of the variety of potential solutions to the problem. The instructor is less advocate than orchestrator.
Integration of new knowledge and skill requires transition time and focused effort on application.
Learning and teaching theories function better as resources than as a Rosetta stone. A skill-training task can draw much from the behavioral approach, for example, while personal growth-centered subjects seem to draw gainfully from humanistic concepts. An eclectic, rather than a single theory-based approach to developing strategies and procedures, is recommended for matching instruction to learning tasks.

The next five years will eclipse the last fifty in terms of hard data production on adult learning. For the present, we must recognize that adults want their learning to be problem-oriented, personalized and accepting of their need for self-direction and personal responsibility.

Tips : Dealing With Google’s New Rules

If you’re using Google Adwords, you’ve probably already seen or heard about the change that’s coming on April 1, 2008:

Important Change to URL Policy Enforcement Starting in April, display URLs for new ads will be required to match their destination / landing page URLs, without exception. Please adjust your URLs accordingly when creating new ads.

I’ve had a few people ask me about how to deal with this so here are a few thoughts:

1. For People Doing Direct Linking
I have 3 solutions for how to deal with this for people who are direct linking to affiliate programs.
First, get better at adwords than your competitors and out rank them. By out rank them, I mean write a better ad that gets a better CTR and hence a higher ranking ad in google’s results. If you do this, you can use the merchants display url with your affiliate link and your ad will be shown above all other affiliates.

If the merchant is advertising for themselves on your keyword…I don’t really have a solution for you. Very often if you outrank the merchant they’ll get really mad at you for being better than they are at selling their product and they’ll kick you out of their affiliate program.

However, if you’re just competing with other affiliates, writing a better ad will usually do the trick to get your ad shown.

One thing you need to realize in this is that while google doesn’t dislike affiliate marketing, it doesn’t help their core business. Affiliates usually fill an inefficiency in a marketplace. Google doesn’t like inefficiencies and if they can take care of them without having an affiliate in the mix, they’ll be more than happy to do so.

As a direct linking affiliate, you’re fighting an uphill battle. Not that it can’t be fought, but over the years google has shown a consistent pattern of making it more and more difficult to do direct linking as an affiliate.

Knowing this, you can either make the choice to continue doing it, fighting the uphill battle, or you can chose to evolve and do something that google isn’t fighting against.

At this point, it’s like the days when adsense died. Google had made it clear that they didn’t like sites that were made for adsense (MFA sites). At one point they made a change where it became very difficult to continue with the page generator/adsense business model. Smart people changed their model. Others continued doing it because it was the easiest path, and today they’re really struggling (at least…I don’t know anyone who is still succeeding with that model. If you do, I want to know them).

Second, set up your own domain. You have a few options in doing this. You can set up a simple iframe landing page where your domain just has a page with an iframe on it. The src= part of the iframe is your affiliate link. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t. I don’t know how google is going to deal with it with their new rules. But, doing this, you can have your display URL be the same as the actual page where the person ends up (because they’re on your website).

Another option for your own landing page is to try and add value to the transaction you’re trying to create. As an affiliate, you’re trying to get person A (buyer) to buy product B. If all you’re doing is providing a link to product B, you’re not adding very much value to that transaction.

However, if you can give person A a reason to buy product B (You give this reason on your website), now you’re adding value to the transaction and now you’re starting to build a business for yourself.

In doing this, you leave the realm of people google is fighting against and join the side of people google likes…information providers.

Google knows that the first reason someone goes online is to find information. It’s always super simple to find someone who will sell you something, google knows that. They also know that it’s much more difficult to find someone who will give you good information without selling you something (or even someone who will give you good information before selling you something).

They also know that the first 2 steps in the buying process (browers and then shoppers) are looking for information. If you can be a voice that someone trusts in those first 2 steps, they’re very likely to trust you when they’re ready to whip out their credit card.

So how do you give a person a reason to buy?
Here are a few ideas:
Write reviews that tell the person which product is the best
Solve a problem the person has and give them the solution if they buy through your affiliate link
Give them a free something (report, mp3, video…) that partly solves their problem, and then tell them to buy product B to completely solve their problem
Write about your personal experience with product B and how it solved your problem and how it will solve their problem too

There are a ton of ways to add value to the transaction. I think most affiliates who are doing direct linking would be surprised to see their conversion rates go up after creating a good landing page.

Third, try cloaking.
You can set up a landing page that just has content on it that’s related to your keywords so that google will give you a high quality score, and then cloak that page (either by a redirect or a straight cloak…there’s software that will do this for you) to go to your affiliate link. This will allow you to pass that visitor on to the final landing page (not your own url) but will have google think that the person actually is landing on your url (so your destination URL is your domain, and google thinks the person is going to end up on your domain (so they’re ok with it for their new rules), but the person actually ends up on the final landing page through your affiliate url).

Just be warned. This can be tricky, it is considered black hat, Google doesn’t like it, and it can get you in trouble.

Lots of people do it.

That’s all I’m going to say about it.

2. For people using adwords for testing
Brian Todd wrote a good piece on how to split test url’s using Adwords even with google’s new rules.

Read it.

3. Go use Yahoo/MSN
Obviously this isn’t a way to deal with Google’s new rules, but I think that most affiliate just blatantly ignore Yahoo/MSN ppc.

Mistake.

While there isn’t as much traffic from either of those as there is from google, and both of their systems are more difficult to use, I consistently find that the traffic I get converts better. Less money spent + more conversions = higher ROI (Yes, I understand that it doesn’t always mean higher profits).

Conclusion
As far as I can tell, what they’ve said is that this will effect “NEW” ads that are created after April 1. It shouldn’t (not yet) affect things you’ve done in the past. But, if google is moving this direction, you better believe that at some point they’ll make this rule retroactive.

This is a good point for affiliate marketers using adwords to make a decision about what they’re going to do in the future with their businesses. As far as I’m concerned, I think it’s time to evolve.

Tips : Newbie makes $10,000 monthly from Clickbank

I’m still somewhat a newbie and have learned lots from over the past while. To those of you who are starting out in IM, I’d like to share with you how I’m making decent profit with Google Adwords and Clickbank.

I’ve posted this in a forum recently and many people found it useful, so I’m posting it here too. The method is work-intensive but extremely simple - no rocket science, and most of this has been covered in ebooks in the past. Before I start, I’d like to say that:
Everything I say in this post is just from personal experiences - your mileage may vary.
Although I’ll be using “dog training” as my example product below, be forewarned that it’s a very competitive niche and that if you don’t know what you’re doing, you could lose big bucks in Adwords without seeing any returns.
From what many publishers and affiliates and end customers are saying, there’s a glitch in Clickbank’s payment processor which causes customers’ credit cards to be declined. This may very well be the reason why so many people, including me, have been seeing sharp declines in sales. Therefore, you may want to avoid Clickbank unless they get their act together.
Using frame redirects, I heard, is against Adwords TOS – so be prepared to have all your ads shut-down in one fell swoop one day.
Using frame redirects is also against Clickbank’s TOS.

Anyway, if you still have your heart set on promoting Clickbank products, here’s how I make over 10k in sales (several thousands in profit) every month using Clickbank and Adwords.

1. Pick a Clickbank Product

I personally tend to stay away from the following types of products:
Internet marketing - too much competition unless you put together a kick-ass landing page and give away bonuses (read: bribe) that are relevant to the particular product (or use other advanced tactics like that - but then I’m still a newbie!)
Tattoo design products - extremely low conversion and fierce Adwords competition - I once promoted “tattoo chopper” and lost close to $200 in the first few hours after I started my campaign
Gambling-related products - blackjack, Texas holdem, betfair, sports betting - any gambling related Adwords campaigns will be found and stopped by Adwords staff sooner or later - they don’t allow it
Anything involving a well-known trademark, such as “World of Warcraft” guides, will be stopped by Adwords staff (World of Warcraft is a trademark)

I also check the following:
That the sales page (or the squeeze page – whichever is the first page on the merchant’s site that the visitor lands on) doesn’t have a pop-up. Pop-ups are against Adword’s TOS. I’ve had more than a few campaigns stopped because of this.
That the product has a low refund rate – to me, anything below 10%, because I don’t want to promote something that I know won’t help people and a good way you can judge that is by the refund rate, which can be calculated as follows:

refund rate % =100*(1-(A/((B-B*0.075-1)*C/100)))

A=$/sale

B=Product Price

C=%/sale
Preferably, the merchant doesn’t have an opt-in form on the sales page, or have a squeeze page – because then the merchant could collect the visitor’s email, sell to them through email, and cheat me of my commissions.However, many merchants are honest and will credit you with your commissions even when they buy through an email sent by the merchant. I sometimes opt-in and check the first email they send me to make sure my affiliate link is in the email)
That the product has a high $/sale – allows me to bid higher and be more competitive in Adwords.
That the merchant’s sales page doesn’t contain any “leakage”, i.e. outbound links from which your visitor could “escape” from the sales page (for example, links to other products for which you don’t get any commissions).
Preferably, the merchant doesn’t offer other methods of payment (if they order by mail or check, you won’t get the commission)

I usually pick around 30 products in one sitting, then move to the next step.

2. Collect Keywords for the Clickbank Products
I first browse the merchant’s sales page to collect relevant keywords, which I call “seed” keywords (e.g. for a dog training product, I may write down these keywords: “dog potty training”, “dog house training”, “stop dog peeing”, “stop dog scratching furniture”, etc. etc.
Then I go to the Google Adwords Tool, type in the seed keywords (make sure to include synonyms), and click “Add” for keywords I know are likely to convert. For each keyword I’d ask myself “if I were a visitor and typed in this particular keyword phrase, what would I be looking for? Would I be interested in this product?”I’m selective – better safe than sorry as I don’t want to waste Adwords clicks on keywords that may not convert. If in doubt I don’t include a keyword that will probably waste me money, because I know there’s no shortage of products so I don’t have to squeeze every sale out of every product.
Because I made sure to include synonyms in my search, the keyword results will include related keywords that I didn’t think of before. I would “dig” into those related keywords as well by typing them into the search box to return even more keywords.
Think of words you can “tag onto” your seed keywords – for example, if the product is the solution for a kind of health condition, for example arthritis, I would do searches on “arthritis treatment, “arthritis cure”, “arthritis remedies”, “arthritis medications”, “arthritis medicine”, etc.
While I’m building my keyword list, I also make a note of words that are completely irrelevant to my product. For example, say I’m promoting a product that teaches women how to make their husbands love them again, and the Google keyword tool results include “make my man love me again lyrics”, I would make note of the word “lyrics” so I could put that as a “negative keyword” for my Adwords campaign later
Finally, when I run out of keyword ideas to type into the tool, I export the whole keyword list into a text file

3. Separate the Main Keyword List into Adgroups

I usually just use an Excel worksheet to organize my keywords into adgroups (if the keyword list is too large I use Keyword Companion (do a search for this if you want to know more about it). I separate them by common words.

Going back to the dog training example, I might have adgroups “stop dog barking”, “dog housebreaking”, “dog potty training” etc., where all the keywords in each adgroup contain the common words [adgroup name]. For example, in the “dog housebreaking” adgroup I may have the keywords:

4. Write the Adwords Ad for Each Adgroup

The following is what I do to consistently achieve high CTRs for my ads. Continuing with the dog training product, say for the adgroup “dog housebreaking”, I might write an ad that looks like this:

For the headline and second line description, I try to stuff as many common keywords (of the particular adgroup) as I could into them to catch the surfer’s eye.

As you know, the keywords that the surfer types into Google’s search box will appear in bold in your Adwords ad. I do the same thing to the display URL, which many people don’t bother to do.

I register a domain with a very short name – for example 1best1.com – and set up unlimited subdomains on that one domain. So in my example I would name my subdomain “dog-housebreaking” so that they would appear in bold to catch the surfer’s eye.

With all the bolded words in the headline, second description line and display URL, many surfers will look at my ad. I read somewhere that most people will only read the headline and first description, so in the first description line I try to stress a benefit.

I simply go through the headline and first paragraph of the merchant’s sales letter and find the most impressive point I can. If all else fails, you can always just say “100% guaranteed or your money back!”, since Clickbank has a refund guarantee anyway.

Using this simple method I’ve almost always been able to start off with an above 1% CTR for my new ads, which gives me a good headstart and keeps my bids low.

As for regional targeting, I don’t really do much with that – I probably should. I mostly just target the English-speaking countries – Australia, Canada, New Zealand,
United Kingdom, and United States. Some products are only useful to US residents, e.g. setting up a business in the US, so it depends.

I usual set my starting bids low to start with, usually at 1/100 of the sales commission or less. I also set my daily budget to $20/day to start.

When I first started I was setting the daily budget to $100, but several run-away campaigns and several hundreds of lost adspend later, I learned better.

Note: I find that it’s easier to first load my campaigns into the Adwords Editor (free download from Google) and then upload them to my Adwords account.

5. Write the Frame Redirect Script

I use frame redirect scripts, because landing pages take too much time to set up, and using my hoplink directly in my Adwords ad would put me at risk of commission theft and would also decrease the chances of my ads getting served, due to the double-serving rule that Adwords has (i.e. they won’t allow two Clickbank affiliates to promote the same product using the same keyword).

Remember I used “Dog-Housebreaking.domain.com” as my display URL? Now I will prepare my frame redirect script, name it “index.php”, and put it into the “dog-housebreaking” subdomain folder. My redirect script would look something like this:

You can cut and paste the code above into a text file and edit the title, your hoplink, and the keywords for your purposes. I include all the keywords from the main keyword list for the campaign, because I don’t want my Adwords quality score to go up due to my redirect page being “irrelevant”. I don’t actually know whether Adwords can read the actual contents on my redirect page or not, but I do it just to be safe.

Optional but Highly Recommended: Use Xtreme Conversions to track your performance!

I strongly suggest that you use Xtreme conversions to track everything. If you do use it, all you need to do is to insert a couple pieces of code into the frame redirect file above.

The best and most inexpensive tracking I’ve used, which I’m still using, is Xtreme Conversions, which can be found here: http://www.xconversions.com

I endorse very few products but this is one of them. In fact, I was so impressed I sent the owner Amir an unsolicited testimonial after I’ve used the tool.

This tool automatically tells you where your clicks are coming from (e.g. google.com, google.com.uk etc., google partners such as ask.com, or particular Adsense websites if you’re using the content network), which keyword the visitor typed into Google to find your ad, and most importantly, which keywords and adgroups are making you the sales.

In the past, to track which keywords are resulting in sales, you had to ask the particular Clickbank product publisher to put a code in their thank-you page that’s specific to you. With this tool, this is no longer necessary.

What I do is, I would start a new campaign with lots of adgroups, run the campaign for a few days, then check my stats. I would first look at my Clickbank sales and make note of the tracking ID associated with each sale. Then I would check my Xtreme conversions stats to find out the keyword associated with each tracking ID.

For example, say I’m promoting a dog training product (fierce competition by the way), and I may have the adgroups “chihuahua puppy potty training”, “golden retriever agility training”, “adult westie house training”, etc.

Say when I check my clickbank stats, I see that I’ve made 3 sales, 2 for “chihuahua puppy potty training” and 1 for “adult westie house training”. At that point I can compare, for each adgroup, how much I’ve spent in ads and how many sales I’ve made as a result.

If an adgroup is costing me too much money without making a sale (for example “golden retriever agility training” which hasn’t made a sale - say that it’s already cost me $30 in adspend, way more than the commission for one sale), I would pause that adgroup.

Whereas for the adgroups that are pulling a profit, I may bid more to get more sales, and/or spend the time to tweak my ad to increase CTR -> increase QS -> lower bid. Over time, the only adgroups I’ll leave on are those that are turning a profit for me.

If I was not tracking, I would only be able to tell whether the campaign was profiting or losing money OVERALL. For example, the campaign may be losing money overall, but in reality perhaps only a couple of the adgroups are making all the sales and the rest are only costing me but making no sales.

If I wasn’t tracking, I would have stopped this campaign thinking it was a dud (or the product wasn’t converting). But because I was tracking, I would know to keep the couple adgroups making me profit and stop the rest.

But that’s only one of the ways I’ve been using Xtreme conversions. For some of my campaigns, I’ve found that clicks coming from Google’s search partners weren’t converting at all, whereas the clicks directly from Google WERE, so I turned the “search” option off - and was able to turn my campaign around.

The same goes for clicks from the content network. With tracking, I know exactly how many sales are coming from Adsense ads. If it’s profitable, I may increase my content bid (and I would know HOW MUCH to increase it by because I know what my profit margin is!). If it’s not profitable, I simply stop the content network.

I also check to see whether the same keywords are consistently resulting in sales for me. For example, I may have an adgroup that’s performing well and when I check my Xtreme conversions stats I may find that one single keyword in that adgroup has been making almost all the sales.

In that case I would “peel and stick” - take that keyword and start a new adgroup for it. That way I could better target the ad to that specific keyword, for example by using the keyword a few times in the ad to make it bold to increase CTR.

When I’m in a REALLY good mood and am feeling particularly bored, I sometimes look through all my Xtreme conversions keywords to pick out those that I know do not match my product and therefore will not convert.

For example, I may be selling a “make your wife love you” type of product. I might be checking my Xtreme conversions stats to see which search phrases my visitors are typing to find my ad, and I might see the phrase “your wife loves you lyrics” - in this case I would know I probably wasted that click because someone who’s searching for lyrics was probably not interested in that product.

So I would add the negative “lyrics” to my adwords campaign. This has decreased wasted clicks and therefore adspend for many of my campaigns.

That’s all I can think of for now…I’ve probably been using the tool for other analyses, but I should stop my ranting before I turn this post into a book. But yes, I HIGHLY recommend this tool to anyone who’s serious about tracking their adwords campaigns!

Word of Caution: Whichever domain you install the tool on, make sure to NEVER, NEVER accidentally let that domain expire….I made that stupid mistake a month ago and didn’t find out for almost 24 hours.

None of my Clickbank sales were recorded during that time and I lost several hundreds of dollars in adspend before setting Xtreme conversions up on a new domain and changing the code on my tracking pages.

I believe Xtreme conversions is responsible for inserting cookies, so when the domain it was installed on was down, no cookies were inserted, so none of the sales were credited to me.]

As you can see, this is no get rich quick method – a lot of work is involved. The beauty of this method is that it’s simple to implement. The flip side is that you’ll have to go through lots and lots of products to find a few that are profitable – that’s the case for me anyway.

If you’re an Adwords expert you’ll most probably do better than me. Usually, I set up campaigns for 30 products at one time. Of each batch of 30 products I may end up keeping only 4-8 that turn out to be profitable, and stop the rest.

This is why tracking is so important – you need to know exactly which keywords in which adgroups are making you money so you’d know which adgroups / keywords / campaigns to keep and which to turn off.

As using frame redirects, as far as I know, is against Adwords’ TOS, I suggest for you to eventually replace redirect scripts with actual landing pages. This is the stage I’m at right now.

Since I already have about 40-50 campaigns that have proven themselves to be consistently profitable, I can now replace their frame redirects with landing pages / squeeze pages, still send the visitor to the merchant’s page after opt-in, then follow up with autoresponder messages to sell that product plus other backend products.

If a niche does really well, I may even develop my own products to sell to my list and then put it on Clickbank too, and also other affiliate networks.

I may even go one step further and set up white hat sites for the specific niches, using those keywords in my Adwords campaigns that are making the most sales (write an article for each keyword etc.).

There….not rocket science. None of what I’m doing or planning is new. It’s just a straight forward method that will get you results (that is, if Clickbank fixes their payment processor soon…).

During conversations with web business professionals about pay-per-click search engines, “traffic volume” is always a hot topic. Over the last year or so, Google Adwords has emerged as the pay-per-click (PPC) search engine most enamored for driving “traffic volume”.

Indeed, with Google Adwords providing paid listings for Google Search, the #1 search engine in the world, as well as American Online (e.g. AOL), Ask Jeeves and MySearch.com, the fourth, fifth, and seventh spots, respectively, for the most popular search engines per a 2004 study by Neilson/NetRatings, it deserves strong recognition.

However, successful web marketers understand that “driving traffic volume” is only a means to an end - the “end” being website conversion.

Website conversion is when a visitor takes action (ideally your most wanted action) on your website after clicking through your ad. It is important because it leads to financial results for your web business and generates a return on your advertising spend (ROAS).

Every web business consists of unique characteristics created by their market demographics, psychographics and product/service benefits. A PPC search engine that generates visitors who convert well for one web business may fail miserably for another. Therefore, when developing your PPC strategy consider the search engines’ “usage demographics.”

Usage demographics are the profiles of Internet users who prefer one search engine over others based on their perceived functionality, content, and search result placement and relevance. By understanding usage demographics for the search engines Google Adwords and Overture supply paid listings to, a web marketer can develop a relevant message and target an ad placement that most effectively connects and converts their most qualified buyers.

Although Google Adwords and Overture’s partner networks consist of thousands of content and search-based websites, the highest percentage of their traffic originates from the five most popular search engines. Among these, Google Adwords supplies paid listings (i.e. Sponsored Results or Listings) to Google Search, Ask Jeeves and American Online (AOL) while Overture supplies Yahoo! and MSN.

Below are the primary search engine usage demographics to consider when developing your PPC strategy:
Gender: Male versus Female

A May 2004 study by Hitwise showed that “55% of women prefer MSN Search while a majority of men favor Google Search”. Yahoo! Search was split even on gender with a greater focus on people 18-34 in age.

A 2004 MarketingSherpa study indicated that MSN’s user profile consisted of time-limited, married females who searched less frequently yet performed greater e-commerce searches. While Google Search was favored by professional males who performed greater news, media, entertainment and education searches with a lesser intent to purchase.

For AOL and Ask Jeeves, AOL is favored by women with less buying intent than MSN Search while Ask Jeeves is preferred by children.

Furthermore, an April 2004 iProspect study uncovered that, “women found paid ads to be more relevant than men did when searching across Google, Yahoo!, MSN and AOL.”

These statistics are startling when considering their influence on your PPC strategy since women represent roughly 75% of major household purchases and as stated in a Women.com study, control 80% of all purchasing decisions.

Relevancy: Paid versus Organic Listings

Another usage demographic to consider for your PPC strategy is ?perceived relevancy? of paid versus organic listings. Ads perceived as having greater relevancy lead to higher website conversions.

The iProspect study referenced earlier also discovered that ?Internet users are more likely to click on an organic search link on Google, and a paid search result on MSN.? Organic listings on Yahoo! were considered 61% more relevant than paid listings while AOL was split 50/50.

Age: Young versus Adult versus Seniors

A third usage demographic to review is age. Preferences among the top five search engines are fairly mixed among age groups; Yahoo! is a strong favorite with 18-34 year olds; while MSN and AOL have a stronger preference among the 35-55+ age group. As stated earlier, AskJeeves is favored by teens and adolescents which is growing in their buying power within American households as stated in a recent BusinessWeek research study.

So what does this all mean for your PPC strategy?

First, it is highly recommended to run Google Adwords and Overture campaigns concurrently using keyword-level tracking systems to determine which PPC search engine generates the most cost effective and best converting visitors. Usage data generated from your website is the best market research.

Second, consider your writing style. By understanding the common characteristics of your customers and writing PPC ads best suited to the search engine?s usage demographics, you will increase your probability of connecting with your audience and improving your website conversion. Also make special note that women have a stronger propensity to buy AND a higher 'perceived relevance' for paid listings on MSN Search.

Third, although Google Adwords accesses a larger traffic pool, Overture?s partner network, mainly MSN Search, has the highest perceived relevancy for paid listings and the highest propensity for purchasing. Although counter-intuitive to current conventional thinking, Overture may deliver better ?converting visitors? than Google Adwords.

In closing, a greater focus on the search engines? usage demographics when writing your PPC ads, targeting PPC channels and developing corresponding landing pages will enable your marketing strategy to ultimately achieve stronger financial results for your web business.

Increasing Conversions with AdWords Demographics

Users running a PPC Campaign in the Google AdWords platform are given the choice of displaying ads on the Google Search Network and/or on the Content Network. I have never been a big fan of advertising on Content Networks, as I find the automated matching process to be less than ideal. I can generally browse the net and quickly find ads that are irrelevant to the sites they are displayed on. This can give one a healthy dose of skepticism.

While advertising on Content doesn’t generally cost a great deal, we have never seen much in the way of results. By and large we do Search Network only, however recently I have had to re-assess that view.

Back in March of this year, Google AdWords released a tool for Demographic bidding from beta into mainstream use. This allows advertisers to specify demographics for age and gender, to filter out unwanted sites. This tool is for use with the Content Network only. I was skeptical as to the value and accuracy of this tool and had not tried it out until just last week.

One of the AdWords campaigns we manage was having some difficulties in an extremely competitive market. Costs were remarkably high, paying $10+ per click on Search Network keywords in order to achieve decent ad positioning. While making some headway towards improving the conversion rate, it was taking too long to get results.

This campaign was a slow starter and had difficulty getting impressions from the beginning. I had tried displaying on Content earlier on in the campaign in a bid to generate more traffic, with predictably poor results. Last week we decided to try this again, this time using the demographic bidding tool to narrow the focus on a more specific audience.

The results were astonishing.

In the first 2 days, we had more conversions from Content than from Search, at a fraction of the cost. I thought this might be a fluke, but we continue to see conversions from that source.

I decid ed to try this on a
campaign for a new client. The first conversion was from Content within a few hours of campaign launch. Needless to say I am testing this out on any existing client accounts that can be targeted in this manner.

For anyone interested in trying this, it can be found on the lower right of the campaign settings page within AdWords.

Here’s a peek at what it looks like:

In this particular case, we have set a higher bid percentage offering for display on sites that would be viewed by women in the 25-34 age range, which is the primary demographic target for this campaign.

Oddly enough, the table shows only impressions. There’s a considerable amount of data from this particular campaign that’s not showing here. There are quite a number of clicks and conversions for the time period this purports to display yet the numbers don’t show. Hopefully it’s just a glitch.

On this page a third image is displayed showing overlapping bid totals for gender and age. (See example on left.)

The difference in stats between the two networks is quite significant. As you can see in this ad group example, the Content cost per click is significantly lower than that of Search.

When the demographic bidding feature is implemented, reports can also be generated in the AdWords reporting tool.

Overall, I like how this is shaping up. It’s nice to find inexpensive new ways to drive more customers to clients.

One thing Google excels at is constant innovation. With the announcement of a beta utility called Ad Planner, more features are in the works for assisting advertisers with Content Marketing. Hopefully we’ll all get to see more of this great stuff in the near future.

Understand the link between keywords, your ads and your website.

This is the golden rule for Adwords.

Google is all about relevancy.

Google wants to be sure that when one of its customers searches for something that they find websites that are relevant to that search. So you need to make sure that your list of keywords in your adgroup work well with the ads you have set for that adgroup AND that the page you send visitors to when they click on you ad also has relevancy to the list of keywords.

Keep this rule at the front of your mind when you set up your campaigns.

Avoid Broad Searches

When you set up your keywords for Google Adwords, the default setting is Broad Match.

What this means is that Google will match your keywords against a search if your words are present in the search regardless of the order of the words, whether they appear together, are plurals, etc.

As an example if you use the term used shoes as a broad match then the following searches in Google would match to your keywords

used shoes
used shoes shop
used horse shoes
shoes used in modern dance
new and not used shoes

As you can see this can give quite a few matches that may not be relevant to your website.

You should avoid broad searches and target you keywords with phrased and exact matches.

A phrased match is one where the keywords will only match if they are used in the exact sequence of your keyword. You enter a phrased keyword by putting quotes “” around your keyword.

So for our example, if I used “used shoes” then

used shoes
used shoes shop

would match but

used horse shoes
shoes used in modern dance
new and not used shoes

would not.

An exact match is one where the keywords will match only if that exact phrase is entered and no other words are used for the search. You enter an exact keyword by putting a square bracket [] around your keyword.

So for our example, if I used [used shoes] then

used shoes

would match but

used shoes shop
used horse shoes
shoes used in modern dance
new and not used shoes

would not.

Avoid using the Content network.

You can set up your campaigns so that you ads appear on both Google’s search network and its content network.

The content network consists of websites that allow Google ads to appear.

I recommend turning off the content option when you set up your campaign because you ad may not always appear on websites that a very relevant to the ad you are running.

Only advertise to locations that it makes sense to.

When you set up your campaigns you can select which countries you want your adverts to appear to. So for example, if you sell a product in the USA that you would not ship outside then there is little point for your ad to appear to people in Europe or China for example.

Pick the times you want your adverts to appear

You can select what time of day you want your ads to appear. So if you are trying to advertise to UK buyers who are surfing during the evening, then those are the times you should be setting your ads to appear.

Organise your ad groups and campaigns

One campaign with one adgroup and one massive list of keywords is doomed. This is the one single mistake that many first time users of Google Adwords make.

Before you start using Adwords, I strongly recommend you sit down with pen and paper to plan out your campaign and adgroup structure.

What works best does tend to vary based on what you are trying to sell. However as a guide for each campaign you should aim for no more than four or five adgroups each with ten to twenty good keywords. This will give you a set of campaigns which are easy to maintain and the keywords in each adgroup can be targeted effectively.

This is only a guideline though. I’ve actually had an adgroup with only one keyword and it performed wonderfully.

Use Landing Pages

So many people make the serious mistake of sending their visitors to their home page when they click on their ads.

You really want to send then directly to the page that is relevant to the ad you are running.

So for example, if you have an online clothes shop then for any adverts you are running for men’s gloves, you really want to send them directly to the page for men’s gloves.

So, don’t use your home page unless it makes sense. Send your visitors to land on a page that is relevant to the advert they clicked on. If you don’t have a page that is relevant to the advert, then why are you running that advert!

Use more that one Advert and TEST!

Always, always have more than one advert running for an adgroup. This allows you to see which advert is getting the best clicks through rate. You can then change the lower performing adverts and try to beat your best one. You will soon find that you have some very effective adverts.

However to test properly, you need to set the adverts to rotate evenly. This is set in the campaign settings. In the ad serving option under the advanced settings, make sure you select the radio button for Rotate: Show ads more evenly.

PPC stands for Pay Per Click and it is one of the driving forces behind the internet. Many people say "Google is just a great search engine, email service, map; that is why they are great." While that is true about Google, the main reason Google is "Google" is because they have facilitated online advertisements so literally any person could be a part of it.

"AdWords is Google's flagship advertising product and main source of revenue ($16.4 billion in 2007)[1]." (Wikipedia)

So while we check our mail, search for movie reviews, and even look up our own name like "Eric Sender", there is a different Google customer who is creating massive advertisement campaigns for their business, placing their ads strategically throughout the entire internet, and after giving Google about $100 or so, unleashing their services to the world instantly.

Just imagine that. You are sitting down with your friend talking about how much you love to cook, or wine taste, or body build, or whatever. You two decide to write a 75 page book (i.e., ebook) on it, or you decide to record yourselves talking about it for an hour (i.e., podcast), or you make a home video of how-to-cook (i.e., youtube). Then you put it online in some all-you-can-eat webhost, go into Google Adwords and the next day attract thousands of users to your site.

(Here is a great article on starting an Internet Site from the Wall Street Journal. I may cross-post here since I do have a few comments on it and feel a couple aspects could be misleading.)

Now, without some training, it isn’t quite as easy yet. That is, it’s not as easy as making scrambled eggs. There are a few programs to learn, a few acronyms to understand, and concepts to feel comfortable with. Most people may just out-source the marketing steps.

These last few weeks, I decided to put my nose into the world of PPC and advertisements online. I am still just starting at this, but I do have a bunch of things to talk about. Have you ever heard of the phrase "Google Slap"? Did you know advertisers need to Bid to have their ads placed online; literally like an eBay bid where the highest bidder takes all. There are millions of web sites out there and it is Google’s responsibility to sniff through all of it, determine the informational value, prestige, entertainment level, and perception of all these sites. And, to an amazing extent, Google did it. However, it is web designers responsibility to appear good to Google. Sound sleazy?

Google Slaps:

The first time I heard this phrase, it sounded like a joke. Google is slapping people? Absurd! Google is the amazing company that revolutionizes the internet on an hourly basis. Well… the backbone of Google is really its advertisements. Google is (or wants to be) known for their very relevant content and high quality links. That is, if your business is a very cheap advertisement scheme where you are just tricking people to buy products through your affiliates, Google will want to "slap" you, or at least make it harder for you to rank high on their advertisements. To me, this is with good reason. Someone who is just acting as a glorified middle man is more of a value-taker than a value-giver.

However, "build a better mouse trap and you’ll get a better mouse." I have come across some very elaborate schemes people do to trick Google into thinking their webpage/business is a genuine source of content and information. I have seen everything from full, blatant copying of Wikipedia articles to displaying fake statistical data.

I don’t intend to sound harsh in the above paragraph, it is what it is. There is a hilarious arms race between Google and her advertising customers. In the end though, Google is creating some amazing internal software and algorithms to keep the integrity of her interface high. At the same time, super affiliates are becoming more inventive in their ways around Google.

In my opinion, I think this is amazing. It keeps Google more innovative and continually growing in their abilities while continually leveling the playing field online. If you are wondering how anyone can make a living running an advertisement business online, keep reading near the bottom of here.

The Bid:

This one isn’t too hard to grasp, but it’s amazing to witness. There are thousands of advertisers online. If your business is about body building, nutrition, or even about Obama & McCain, you are going to want to first find at least 1000 to 2000 keywords associated with those topics, then place bids on all of them. Now how on earth does one find 1000 keywords? You can’t just sit there and come up with that many.

While there are free, limited tools online, advertisers will easily search out premium, hundred dollar services like Keyword Elite. This is a program that allows its users to type in a general keyword, like "Diet" and it will scour through Google, Yahoo, Ask, and keyword databases to find the most relevant keywords. So, if your general theme is "Diet" it will find all keywords ranging from "Atkins Diet" to "Deit wut iz ut" with all the misspellings.

This too is against Google’s policies. This is why Google has the Captcha pictures all over the place. But, just like the better mouse, programs will find ways around the Captcha.

So, once a person has their list of 1000 keywords, they are ready to put them into Google Adwords. (They could also use Yahoo, MSN, Ask but I haven’t delved into those interfaces yet.) Once they input their keywords into the system—something I won’t go into too much details here, but this web page may help you out for now—the advertiser must pick a bidding value for each and every keyword.

So how does a person know how much to bid? Well, for one thing it is vital to know what your ROI goal is—that is, for every $1 spent, do you want $2 earned, or $1.5 earned, or $10 earned? This is highly dependent on your conversion rates—that is, what percent of people who click on your ad actually do business with you. If you get 5% of clicks to convert into a sale, and every sale is only $1, then you would want your bid to be about $0.02 per click to make 100% ROI, or turn every $1 spent into $2 earned.

But is $0.02 too low? If you are bidding on a term like "Obama" or "McCain" then two cents is almost certainly too low.

Luckily, Google Adwords offers a program called Adwords Editor which facilitates much of this process, especially in using massive numbers of keywords. Once all your keywords have been uploaded, there is a way to have it display the minimum bid size per each keyword. Some range from $1.00/click all the way down to the $0.02 range: "Barack Obama" would be the $1.00/click while the "Bark Obma politics is koool" is $0.02. So think about it, if got 500 people to click on your $1.00/click ad, that is a $500 bill you have to pay. You better hope you made at least $500 (not counting taxes) you need to pay. However, if it were $0.02 a click, then your COGS is only $10…

So it seems like it can be very, very hard to make even a positive ROI, not to mention a 100% return. $0.02/click is a bit too low and anything higher than that compromises your profitability. Google understands this. This is where some of the Google Slappage comes into play. A site Google deems as inferior may need to pay more per bid. Think of it as a weight pulling down a web page. However, a normal web page won’t have to worry as much.

Either way, to get traffic to your website and make a positive ROI, an advertiser must find the right balance between bid size and performance.

So the last question is: Who are you bidding against. Obviously, by entering this advertisement world, you are bidding against everyone else in the business, except you do not, and cannot know who they are. There is a lot of money online, people use it to support themselves, their family, pay their children through college, and fund their health care, etc. Being successful online is a real thing. So if you are trying to bid for a keyword like "Obama" of course some people will drive up their bids to $1.00+, but that can only mean people who are willing to spend $1.00 means that they are converting and getting a positive ROI. Thus, they know something you don’t.

That is my assumption at least. Sure, at times a person would want to experiment and take a loss. Pay $1.00 for an otherwise cheap keyword just to see what happens, but if a keyword is consistently $1.00/click, you know there is some huge, advanced system in those web pages churning high conversion rates. Just like Obama’s donation campaign. How much ROI does that campaign make? I bet they pay $1.00 - $2.00 per click, but 10% of the people who do click on their ad donate $10-$100 to their campaign. So they either break even or make a killing.

However, if the most your business could ever get is $1.00 per sale, it makes no sense to bid anything higher than $0.05 - $0.10 depending on your conversion rate. The answer to this problem is very obvious: diversify. Diversify or Die. Run many campaigns in parallel and make sure you are doing everything Google wants.

So, I am just taking a peak into the world of PPC. Of course I am not into it so much that I can drop out of work or school and pay off my parent’s mortgage. I am just playing around with it. There is an entire new world out there. One thing I notice is that people into PPC and online business don’t seem to talk about it much with strangers. The reason for this is most people do not understand the first thing about the internet. I was at a bar the other night chatting with a lovely lady who asked me what I like to do. I told her I am into internet business (even though I am not really yet) and her eyes glazed over like she just took a sleeping pill. Oh well, I think it’s an extremely interesting new beast in Humanity.

When in human history could your average Joe pay about $20-$50 in advertising and have their business displayed all over planet Earth? I am fascinated by this. However, the running joke is "Just tell people you are a drug deal—they won’t understand the internet and have no clue how you make your money otherwise" and I am finding this to be true. Not only among the girls at the bar, but even my regular friends. Oh well, its all good.

Tips : 10 Unconventional Diet Tips: How to lose 50 pounds in three months

The following are 10 unconventional weight loss tips that worked for me. Between January 4, 2006 and March 31, 2006 I lost fifty pounds. These tips work well because almost every tip is focused around completing a small goal. In my opinion, to stay motivated and lose a significant amount of weight, you should complete many goals in a short period of time. The reason I call these tips unconventional is that I had not seen a majority of them before starting my diet.

I will start by recognizing the typical “calories in, calories out” schpeil. Yes, to lose weight you have to eat well and exercise. But there is much more to it than that, and I don’t want to spend time regurgitating ideas you’ve heard before. That brings me to the first point:

Buy a digital scale
This seems easy enough. I recommend that before starting a diet, buy a scale that is accurate to .2 (two-hundredths of a pound). I will explain why below. I also recommend either buying a scale that can record your daily weight, or manually logging your weight everyday. I bought a scale that was accurate to .2 and logged my weight at Sam’s Club for $22. It has been a great investment.

Weigh yourself everyday
You’ll find that almost every other dieter will tell you to weigh yourself only once a week. I recommend the exact opposite. I am very goal oriented and I like to see results everyday. The reason I recommend buying a scale that is accurate to the .2 is that there is a very big difference between weighting 170.8 one day and 170.0 the next day. Losing .8 pounds in one day is excellent. However, if your scale is not accurate enough to report the loss and still shows 170 after a day of healthy eating and working out, you will feel extremely discouraged. A more detailed scale makes it easier to keep a positive outlook. The more successes (days with positive weight loss) the easier it is.

Drink 8 glasses of water everyday
This one is obvious and broadly recommended, however, the reason I recommend it is slightly different. Drinking eight glasses of water per day helps you “feel less hungry.” I can’t prove this scientifically, however, when I am at work, I drink 4 cups in the morning and 4 cups in the evening. On the days that I don’t drink the water, I feel hungrier, earlier. Also, on the days I don’t drink water I feel sleepier, sooner. Don’t feel intimidated by trying to drink 8 glasses of water. Try doing what I do: I have a pint glass I keep at work, it holds sixteen ounces (as all pint glasses do). All I do is drink two pints of water in the morning and two in the afternoon.

Make your diet public
Tell people you’re on a diet. There’s no reason to be ashamed to be on a diet. I found that trying to keep my diet a secret was harder than just telling people. In fact, telling your coworkers, girlfriend, family, etc. will increase your accountability. It motivated me knowing that my coworkers and family knew that I was dieting because I did not want to fail. I also chose a typical “fat picture” and put it on my fridge, in my cubicle, and on my wall. I wanted to have a continual reminder to lose the weight. I know it’s a cliche, but it was important for me to remind myself of my ultimate goal.

I feel I should also note that although I was 50 pounds over weight, when I told people I was on a diet they often said “you don’t need to diet.” I found this surprising because I was obviously overweight. Beware that you will likely hear similar comments. I found it easier to just accept the “compliment” than to try to justify my diet to them. Remember that you are on a diet for you, and that you do not need to justify yourself.

Don’t diet on the weekends
This is another unconventional bit of advice. I was able to lose 50 pounds without dieting on the weekends. I found myself tired, depressed, and unmotivated if I tried to continue my diet into the weekend. I felt that Friday and Saturday (my weekend) was a time to celebrate 5 days of dieting. You may not find this necessary, especially in the first few weeks of a diet. However, as many weeks passed, the weekend became a time for me to celebrate my weekly successes and get myself mentally prepared for another five days of dieting. I considered it a mental recharge.

Don’t sacrifice your life for your diet
On occasion, you will find yourself unable to eat healthy. Whether this is because of lunches with your team at work, birthdays, or special occasions, there will be events that you just can’t (or don’t want to) eat healthy. A diet will feel overwhelming if you have to sacrifice special events in your life. The way I combated this was to exchange a day that I was not going to diet on the weekend. In other words, if I didn’t diet on Tuesday, for example, I would diet on Saturday, instead.

Make the small changes
This is a pretty common tip, however, I have a twist to it. Rather than giving up what most diets say you should give up (soda, coffee, beer, caffeine, etc.) just make healthier decisions. I didn’t want to give anything up, so I decided to make some changes instead. The first switch I made was switching to diet soda. Don’t worry, you’ll quickly get used to the flavor. Before I started my diet, I swore I would never drink diet soda. Now thanks to my girlfriend, diet is the only soda I drink. The second switch I made was to drinking black coffee. Cut out the sugar and creme, and you get the benefits of coffee (caffeine) without the calories. The last major switch I made was to “healthy” beer. I’m a Miller Lite drinker, however, by temporarily switching to Beck’s Premier Light (60 calories per serving) I was able to still enjoy a healthy social life while maintaining my diet.

In addition to making the small changes in your diet, make the small changes in your life: park further away, walk to the end of the train platform and get in the last car, and vow not to take an elevator for an entire week. I also found it advantageous to wear a pedometer and try to compete against myself for how far I could walk in a single day. The furthest I walked in a day was 6.5 miles. I voluntarily walked to work twice a week.

Gain perspective by understanding the fractions
Your diet is an incredibly small fraction of your life. If you live for 80 years, and dieted for four months, that would only be .42% of your life. That’s right, if you diet for four months, it will be less than one half of one percent of your life. On the other hand think of the major benefits you can get from .42% of your life. If it helps you stay motivated, count down the days starting at 120.

Rationalize your workouts
Finding the time to get to the gym can be very difficult. However a 1/2 hour workout is only 2% of your day (assuming 24 hour days). For me, the most motivating thought was comparing my workouts to sitcoms. As a huge Everybody Loves Raymond fan, every time I would sit down to watch an episode, I would remind myself that in the 1/2 hour that I was sitting and doing nothing, I could complete my daily workout.

You’ve lost the weight, what now?

Have a red flag weight
Once you’ve lost the weight, you need to keep it off. This is where the red flag comes in. You need to pick a weight and vow to never get heavier than it again. It is normal for your body to fluctuate five to ten pounds. I recommend picking a weight that is ten pounds heavier than what you “normally” weigh and never weigh more than it again. Setting a red flag weight allowed me to keep off every pound for over 1 year.

Lastly, for the curious out there…I followed the Weight Watchers diet. I did not pay for the diet, nor did I go to meetings. I found out all the information about the diet on-line. The first place to look is at their patent.

All well known diets are available via Google Patent Search. For the several months that I was dieting, I also gave up red meat and made sure to drink a lot of milk. The preceding tips worked perfectly for me and they will work for you, too. Prior to creating my own diet plan, I tried to diet several times and failed every time. I swear by these weight loss tips. After a campaign has accrued a significant number of clicks on the content network, you can run a placement performance report to see where your ads have appeared. We recommend that you focus on sites where your ads have received a statistically significant amount of traffic (about 50 clicks or more). For more suggestions on how to use placement performance reports, please see these best practices.

To increase traffic from sites that are performing well, consider creating a new placement-targeted campaign and selecting CPC bidding instead of CPM. This strategy allows you to bid more for high-performing sites without increasing your bids for the rest of your content network traffic in existing campaigns.
Placement performance reports and category exclusion
If you run a placement performance report and notice URLs that have received a significant number of clicks, but are driving very few sales, you can first check these URLs to see if the low-performing pages
you’re appearing on are similar in any way.

You can then use the Site and Category Exclusion tool to see if any categories available for exclusion match the patterns you’ve seen across low-performing URLs. By viewing statistics for each category within the tool you can confirm that a category is performing poorly before you exclude it.
Placement targeting and category exclusion
If you’d like to run a campaign focused on increasing awareness of your business, you can create a CPM-priced placement targeting campaign to reach your target audience. If your primary goal is to generate awareness or maximize impressions, you should consider selecting CPM instead of CPC pricing.

You can then exclude categories for your placement-targeted campaign if you know that pages matching a certain topic or page type don’t fit your business objectives. Tips : The 10 most expensive Adwords Mistakes

Adwords has become the first point of call when it comes to pay per click advertising. Yet many advertisers are throwing money down the drain because they are making one of these mistakes.

1. Not targeting specifically enough - This mistake is by far the most common. A perfect example is a digital camera retailer advertising for the keywords “digital camera”. A person that is searching for “digital camera” may be looking for a lot of different things. He may be looking for digital camera reviews, digital camera pictures, digital camera giveaways etc. It is unlikely that advertising for that keyword will return a profit. Instead, use more targeted keywords like “buy digital camera” and “digital camera shop”. Another example is an Adwords manager advertising on the keyword “adwords”. Any Adwords manager that does this is throwing money away and can hardly be trusted with your own Adwords campaign.

2. Daily Budget too small for the cost per click - This is a very costly yet surprisingly common error that is often made by experienced marketers that are not familiar with Adwords or online advertising. It occurs when you have, say, a $20 budget, are paying 50c per click, and you get $20 worth of clicks by lunch time. The campaign won’t be showing for the rest of the day once the budget has been hit. The solution is to lower the amount you are paying per click. In this example you would set your CPC to 30c. The campaign would run all day and you would receive more visitors for a lower price per visitor!

3. Not taking location into full acount - This mistake is very common. A good example is a Victorian tour operator that advertises for the keywords “Bus tour”. If it isn’t set up as a specific match, he will be buying clicks when people search for “Adelaide Bus Tour”. If you are a location based advertiser, the solution to this problem is to set up all your keywords as specific matches (use “[" and "]” around your keywords), and also set up keywords for your locations. (e.g. [bus tours Victoria])

4. Not using conversion tracking - Every marketer knows that to justify spending you need to be able to measure results. Conversion tracking is very easy to set up and every campaign should have it. If you don’t have it set up contact me now and I will do it for you very quickly. Your boss will love you. Without conversion tracking, you don’t know how effective your campaign is, and you won’t be driven to improve it.

5. Paying too much per click - #1 is not always the best spot. If you’re competing against the big guns with bottomless budgets, you should not be at #1. Those guys know they are losing money on their campaigns, but that doesn’t mean you should! If your goal is to maximise ROI, you should choose a price that maximises your ROI. The big guns are often blowing money “branding”, or simply have huge budgets because their online advertising budget looks small next to their TV advertising budget.

6. Not paying enough per click - If you are making a positive ROI, you should keep spending to maximise profits! For example, if you figure out through conversion tracking that ever visitor is worth $2, spend up to $2 per visitor. Don’t stay at $1 because it is currently turning a profit. There are exceptions to this of course, one is if you can’t handle the extra workload more visitors will bring.

7. Paying too much for clicks from the content network - This is another very costly but very common mistake. The content network is much less targeted than the search network and therefore, will convert a lot less. If you advertise on the content network, lower your bids for it by a large margin first.

8. Not using landing pages - The page your visitors come to should be a continuation of your ad. If your site is large, your home page simply won’t fulfill this task effectively. Use targeted landing pages to keep the flow in your sales pitch, and to make it easy on your customers to find what they’re after.

9. Not using more than one ad - Unless you are the perfect copywriter (which you aren’t), you should test different ads and see which works best. The difference of one word can make a huge difference. Even one minor spelling difference can make a difference. Once you’ve established what ad works best, see if you can better it by creating a new ad and comparing them. Repeat this process indefinately!

10. Adding all the keywords Google recommends - If you use all the keywords Google recommends you to use, you will be spending a lot of money on visitors you didn’t want. (See mistake #1). Use Google’s Keyword tool as a guide, but always refine your keywords and target them very specifically to your market.

The higher up the search ladder you go, the more potential clicks you will receive since the searcher will see your ad first. This creates an upward spiral which if you can get on the right side of with relevant ad copy from the beginning, you’ll end up paying less per click, and getting more clicks on your ad for the same daily budget.

Click Thru Rate is one of the determining factors to quality score, and hence the success of your campaign. As you can tell by now, writing the best and most relevant ad copy to achieve such high clicks is key. The most important part of writing a good Google Adwords ad is the headline.

The most important part of your Google Adwords ad copy is the headline. A poor headline can make or break an adwords campaign and leave you way out of pocket. Five times as many people read the headline than they do the description lines and display URL, so unless your headline captures the browser, your adwords ad won’t get clicked on.

The simplest way to write headlines is to include the keyword in the headline every time.

When you know every adwords tips and how adwords works you may ask “How the hell I can write a successful ads that clicks and make a sale”. That is one of the most important factors in Adwords, having a good headline that clicks and the most difficult one (for me at least!). Testing and researching over the net I have found many good tips that most affiliate marketers will not reveal.

Use questions that arouse curiosity or interest. For instance, you can say Want to make $10,000 in one hour?
You can also offer instructions.. Cure the cold in five simple steps, or How to keep your PC virus clean, would be interesting.
Tell a story. There’s nothing better to spark interest than to appeal to your audience’s sympathy or empathy. Tell them a story like How I made $10,000 in one hour, or I lost 50 pounds in two weeks.
Divulge information. Claim something that only you know, such as The Mystery of Google AdWords. People will notice this, especially if they want to learn more about what you have to offer.
Claim unbelievable stuff! People will be intrigued with Make $10,000 in one hour or Keep thin without exercise. You can make it as absurd and unbelievable as possible, and people will surely notice!
Create (and maintain) trust. The web is all about trust these days. Recommended by the Queen, would be good.
Compare People love to go for what’s better. You can say cheaper than Wal Mart or better than Coke. If you are promoting a product that their competition is a big well known company compare it in your ad. For example you are selling a book from a bookstore that is not well-known in the market compare it saying something like this: Amazon vs X name, and say in a few words the one key comparison why x-name is better than amazon

The Three Dots: Mindvalley Labs found this and was the first to publish it. They made a comparison about adding three dots in the final phrase of each ad, and it worked very well. Why it worked so well this method? it naturally tells people that there is more information waiting behind the add.

Tiny changes: Small changes can make a huge impact in CTR. Even a word can make your ads to boost in CTR. Again, Mindvalley Labs found this they had the word “Changes” into their ads and they changed to the word “Change” and that tiny change alone resulted in a 180% increase in the Click-Through-Rate

Mindvalley folks explained why “Change” and “Changes” can cause such a big conversion difference:

The word “changes” insinuates AUTOMATIC change. The word “change” implies the act of doing something yourself. For example, if you were advertising a tool for cleaning for your dog:

“Dog-Clean-O-Matic Washes Your Dog Spotless”

Makes the reader see the machine as an automatic tool. Toss your dog into it and voila - the animal’s now spotless. You don’t have to do any dirty work.
On the other hand:

“Dog-Clean-O-Matic: Wash Your Dog Spotless”

Makes it seem like the machine requires YOU to do manual labor. Perhaps it nothing more than a fancy new kind of fur brush.
This distinction is important depending on the product you’re selling. In the ad above, we’re selling a relaxation CD: perhaps this is why the word “Change” relates better to the audience. They want to be in control when they go through this relaxation process. The word “changes” perhaps implies something where the participant losed control - as in hypnosis. It could be intimidating.
For other ads - in the case of software for example - I have seen the word “changes” work better. This could be because, for software, we want stuff that does the work for us automatically.So try testing both phrases on your ad.
The Power of The “Secret” Keyword: One of the power headlines keywords is the word : Secrets and this resulted a huge boost in CTR +200%!

“You Need To” a powefull keyword: Another powerfull keyword is “You Need To” it usually makes people clicks less (people don’t like to be ordered) but the convertion is higher because you are visitors what to do. If they want to do it they will click on your ad.

Keywords in Different orders: If you have an ad group X and a keyword Y will not always work if you use the headline for the keyword Y. Using other extra keywords in the title will work much better. This testing will show you that the keyword Y is “Meditation Music” and mindsvalley used in the title as well but adding extra keywords in the title “Music for meditation” worked much better and if you analyse it is the same keyword but in diffirent order.

Capitalization: This is one of the most important tip and the easiest one. Capitalize every keyword in your ad but do not capitalize the words: “in”, “and”, “on”, and those 2 words like “up”, etc… This small but powerfull tip can boost your CTR for 80%.
Repetitive keywords: Repeating words in your ads can decrease your CTR and Conversion. In this example (taken from Mindsvalley “again”) shows that they repeated two keywords in the same ad, one in the title and one in the description “Start to”. Then they changed the title from “Start to” to “Learn to”. This tiny change boosted their CTR to +36%. Learn from this that with Google adwords there is no limit to optimize your ad even tiny changes.
Think as a Google searcher: Think as one of the visitors that want to search for the keyword that you are advertising. If you are advertising the keyword “Fat loss”, what you are willing to find? I assume that something “How to loss fat”, so the user wants to learn how they can loss fat. Add in your ads “Learn How…” depends in what kind of services, product or site you are promoting. Keep splitting ads and testing to see which ad will work for you.
The Keyword: Free: The free keyword is one of the most powefull keywords that you can add in your ads if it works with what you are advertising. If you are advertising a product, service or site that give you something free is a MUST to add it on the ad, your CTR will boost up for sure. This is an example from MindValleyLabs:
Stay away from “Buy” in headlines: Many adwords advertisers believes in this, putting away the word “Buy” in the headlines. It seems that users automatically put an X in your ad when they see the keyword “buy”. In this case is good to add instead of buy, just the company name, product name or service name. For example, if you want to promote a fat loss product which is called XYZ, it will be good to just add XYZ as your headline and in the description line add the scary word “buy”.
Feel the power of “Download” keyword: Anyone tested the Download keyword in your description or headline? This is a powerfull keyword to add in your ads. Why? The keyword download might give people the idea that they can get something very fast
Time, Time & Time: You know that most search engine users are lazy and they want to find what they want as soon as possible. So let’s play with keywords that means times: “Today”, “Now”,…
The Power of “Exposed” Keyword: Adding this little keyword in my headline increased my CTR by 150%. The keyword “Exposed” is a very showy word. I tried this keyword when I am promoting a product review so I add something like this: Product name review Exposed or Product Name Exposed. You can use it in many different ways…
Include Targeted Keywords In Your Ad: When you create an ad group, the best practice is to use one or two keywords which are similar so you can add those keywords in your headline and description. Adding the targeted keywords in your ad is one of the most important things you need to do. I always add something like this: “Targetted Keyword” + Powerfull keyword (which some are mentioned above, as free, exposed…).
Sell The Benefits: This is another “old” or “classic tip” that most of the e-books recommends, adding benefits and telling the user why your ad is better than your competitors. Here are 3 examples so you can understand better about the benefits which is important:

Example #1:

This is a good example of Weight loss, the benefits are “Lose 15 lbs in 3 weeks” and as mentioned before the advertiser also add time “Quick”. Also remember the #5 tip? “Claim unbelievable stuff!” You can make better adding “40 lbs in 3 weeks”.

Example #2:
Here the benefit is: “Absorb 28% of fat…” That is in the same niche as the first example but different benefit. So if you are searching for weight loss which benefit is the best?

Example #3:

From a different niche, check that the benefit is in the second description, and the first description give the features of the product: “Free 3 months hosting, No setup fee” that I can call it a good benefit for those that are searching for a webhosting solution. Check also that they used the powerfull keyword “Free”.
Remove Common Words: Remove common words, such as “a, an, in, on, it, of”, etc. Remove every word that does not absolutely need to be in the ad. Make every word count.
Try to stay away from freebies hunters: I mentioned above that is good to have the keyword “Free” but when your product does not offer anything for free. Try to put away the users that wants free stuffs adding the price of the product. You will receive a lower CTR but we are here to make a sale and not just traffic.
Call-to-Action Phrases: This is important also depends on which niche you are, that’s why testing is the best thing you can do. Some of the call-to-action phrases: Buy Today (again adding time) - Save 50% - Download Free Trial Now (adding 3 powerfull keywords: download, free and now) - Sale Ends Tomorrow (adding time) - Subscribe - Read - Download Now - Sale Ends Tomorrow . You can see that every step can be mixed with all the tips mentioned above.

Tips : XP SysKey Trick

If you have Windows XP then I really think you're going to like this week's security tip. Are you in a situation where you really don't want anybody accessing the family PC while you're not around? Maybe you don't want anybody to use your computer at all. Maybe you just want a little tighter control over when and by whom your PC gets used. If any of these situations sounds like yours then read on.

This week's security tip is on the syskey command. The syskey is a command line tool to help you enable your Startup Key. Without getting too techy on you, the Startup key is a complex algorithm that if configured can stop anyone from logging on to your system who doesn't poses the key. No startup screen or user accounts will be available until you present the key, you're basically looking at a black screen with one small lonely window asking for the Startup Key to gain access. The Startup Key, which is a floppy disk with the appropriate key code, simply needs to be inserted into the floppy drive, and activated. This will satisfy the security request and allow you to proceed to the login screen. If you don't have a floppy drive then I'm afraid you might as well stop reading now.

The Startup Key is created when you enable the Startup Key process as described later in this article. One thing you must keep in mind, and is of the utmost importance, you should make at least one copy of this floppy, test it to insure that it works, and put it in a safe place. If you lose this Key you will not be able to log into you Operating System. You may even want to make a third copy to keep off-site. If you do lose your Startup key then your only option is to use a Restore Disk (If you have one) to restore your registry to a state it was prior to the enabling of Startup Key.

OK, if this sounds like a security measure you would like to put into action then follow the directions below. Again, please make at least one copy of this disk so you don't lock yourself out of your system and send me a bunch of hate e-mail. Well, with that said twice I guess it's show time. The directions below will help you get things set up, and below that I have attached a link out to Microsoft's information on this so you can look it over.

CONFIGURING STARTUP KEY:

* Go to Start/Run and in the blank field type "syskey" press enter, or OK.
* You should see a small window titled "Securing the Windows XP Account Database". From this Window select the "Update" button to move to the next window.
* The "Startup Key" is the next window. You'll see a couple of options there, but the one we are looking for says "Startup Key on floppy disk", along with some warning about how your system is going to startup now.
* After selecting this click OK, and a pop-up will alert you that the key has been changed. Another message follows asking you to insert a disk in drive A: (Floppy drive).
* Insert the floppy, click OK, and one more window will come up telling you that the Key has been changed and you need to have this floppy disk in order to log into Windows. That's exactly what we want.

When you're all done go ahead and eject the floppy (you might want to slide the little lock up on the floppy to insure you don't format it on accident), and restart the PC. Windows will appear to come up normally, but after it loads the kernel the "Windows XP Startup Key Disk" window pops-up. Grab your Startup Key floppy put it in the floppy drive, and select OK. You'll see Windows load up and bring you to your user logon screen.

I told you this is a cool trick and really helps lock down you PC. I hope you get some use out of this, but please be careful.

Tips : Back Up Your Data

Just about everybody has important data on their hard drive, from digital pictures to important documents, emails, earmarked websites the list goes on and on. In my experience people are pretty lax about backing up their PCs, and I think this really is an area that deserves attention. With a good back up set you can bounce back from a fatal hard drive crash and be up and running with all the your pictures, documents, downloads, email and favorites before you know it. Having important files stored on removable media is also a good safety precaution in case you get a virus or Trojan horse.

There are a couple of different ways to back up important data, from the casual copy and paste to running complicated scheduled backups. There is no wrong way, as long you have a copy of everything you need.

You can save the data on a couple of different types of media (floppy, ZIP, CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, Flash memory, even dat drives) but for home use I really recommend either CDs or DVDs, floppies are just to small, Zips, although bigger than floppies are still small (100-200MB), and they're old and kind of expensive. Flash memory can store data but it's not really something you want to save data to and store away unless there is no other option. DAT tapes are more for the corporate end of things and are overkill in most homes. CDs are cheap, hold a lot of data, work on any PC and are easy to store.

If you use CD-RW, or DVD-RW you can actually save money by setting up a "round robin" with your backups. To do this, you need at lest 3-4 of the same backup set, take the oldest and erase it. Now use the blank disk for the new backup, the next time you do a backup use the oldest disk in the set and so on and so forth.

As for the methods of backing up, I find it's easiest when all my intended files and folders are organized in structured manner and not scattered all over my hard drive. This is a good way to insure that you don't forget anything important by hunting for a bunch of individual files. An easy way to stay organized is to create a descriptively labeled folder structure and try to be diligent about saving your data to it's designed folder.

Another good practice is to test your backups, don't just take the burning software's word for it. After a backup, explore the disk and randomly go through files and open them up to make sure that they're complete and not corrupt. Learn from my experience, waiting for a complete system failure is not a good time to check the validity of your backups. This is a good way to get yourself in a lot of trouble as well ?I know if didn't back up the pictures or movies of our kids I wouldn't be able to live with my self.

Once you have all your ducks in a row, it's time to back up. There are a number of ways to do this as well. The easiest is to open you burning program and select data CD and go through the folder then explorer and grab the folders you want to back up. When you select a folder you should see it in the "burn" selection window, once you done with your backup selection choose "burn".

If you have Windows XP you have the luxury of being able to open up the blank CD or DVD in Windows Explorer and copying and pasting the desired folders right onto the disk and select "Write files to CD" and Windows will do the rest for you. This is nice but not all of us have XP, and I personally still like to use my third-party software.

Most burning software has their own backup services, and there are a number of third-party back up titles out there. The nice thing about using these types of software is the options. Things like compression, backup jobs, and incremental backups. These are nice features especially when you have some backups that you want to insure are up to date. For instance, you can create a "Back up Set" which is basically a saved and named list of folders and files that you want backed up. This makes the whole process so easy?you can create a backup set and once a week or so your can run it and it will either create a new back up or save just the changes to the backup. These are two options that are usually found in backup programs. If you use "backup sets", it's important to keep the files organized, and in all the correct folders. You can also schedule Backup Jobs, which are basically backup sets that are scheduled to run at predetermined times, and intervals (i.e. once a week Friday at 6:00).

There have been a number of really bad viruses just within the past 6 months. We've seen the W32.Beagle, W32.Netsky, MyDoom, and so on. Most of these viruses were transported or replicated from pc to pc-using email attachments. These are easy to spot if you're paying attention, simply because they are usually executable files, but not always.

Some attachments contain Macros (simple programs that run within other programs, all the titles in Microsoft Office use macros). If you're not that familiar with spotting file extensions, don't worry, that's what I'm here to talk about today. If you are a little hazy on the whole "file extension" thing then let's spend a few moments explaining it.

File extensions are what tell the program how to treat a particular piece of data. For example, most people are somewhat familiar with .doc or a .txt file extensions these are both text documents and when the user opens this file the Operating System looks at this extension and then knows how to open it.

Hackers try to use some sort of eye-grabbing ploy to get you to open their email and activate the virus, which is always an attachment. Most Anti-virus nowadays stops, or at least warns, you of these high risk attachments and even take measures to protect you. However, on the average 10-15 new viruses are created every day and I personally wouldn't count on any program to 100% protect my pc. That's why I scrutinize any email, if I wasn't expecting an attachment, I won't open it until I had a chance to talk to the sender.

Some of the more common file types used to hide viruses include:

.scr - Windows Screen Saver - USE CAUTION if you receive a screen saver via email. They can contain worms or viruses
.pif - DO NOT OPEN! This is most likely a virus. Clicking it will run a program or code that can mess up your computer.
.exe - executable file - a program that contains a virus, Trojan horse, or worm
.pps - MS PowerPoint (can contain macro virus)
.zip - Zip (compressed) file
.vbs - Visual Basic script
.bat - Executable MS-DOS batch file
.com - DOS executable command
.asp - active server page - internet script
.doc - Word document (can contain macro virus)
.xls - Excel file (can contain macro virus)

This is in no way a complete list. Just because an attachment may have one of these extensions doesn't mean that it is a virus, but it should send up warning flags. Hackers use clever subject lines, and viruses can appear to come from a friend so keep on your toes and don't fall victim to their deceptive traps. Scan those attachments and verify with the sender before opening.

Record locking mechanism is the most common method to implement the concurrency control in DBMS. Locking means record must be locked (i.e. access disallowed) for other users, when any user opens it for update.

Suppose in the above example, as soon as an opens his account through his ATM card. The record is locked for person B, when A completes his transaction, the balance is updated to 2000 $ and record is unlocked. Now when B opens his account, the system will show the balance of B cannot overdraw 2000 $ and thus it.
Types of Record Locking Record locking can be of following two types:

Shared Locks

Shared locks are also called Read Locks. When shared lock is applied by a transaction, other users or transactions can be read but not update the locked record shared locks are applied in case when you want to open same record for reading such that no other user changes these records during this time. Other transactions can also apply shared locks but not exclusive locks on these records.

Exclusive Locks

Exclusive locks are also called Write Locks. In case of exclusive locking, other transactions cannot be read or update the locked record. Exclusive lock is applied in situations when you want to change or update record such that no other user or transaction is able to read or update this record during this time. Other transactions cannot apply any type of lock on exclusively locked records. It note that locks are applied for short time only as other users are restricted for certain operations during this time.
Deadlock

Record locking mechanism may create an undesirable situation where two or more users are waiting for the completion of each other's actions. This situation is called deadlock. In order to explain the concept of deadlock, let's take an example. Suppose there are two users Jone and Tony. They are working in a multi-user environment and try to access a common database table "student". Jone accesses record number 3 and exclusively lock it. Similarly, Tony accesses record number 6 and he exclusively locks it. Now Jone needs to read record number 6 before releasing record number 3 and Tony needs to read record number 3 before releasing record number 6.Both are waiting for each other's actions, which will never occur. A deadlock has been created and working of both the users has been stopped. More users may get involved in this deadlocked situation. A deadlock situation may also arise in real world. Suppose two trains approach each other from opposite sides on a single track. Each train wishes other one to get back to make way for it. But this will never happen. A deadlock has happened.
Controlling Deadlock

There are different methods to control the situation of deadlock. The most common method is Deadlock Prevention. In deadlock prevention it is required that all the needed records are locked in the beginning of a transaction. No record is locked afterwards until the completion of the transaction. If at the beginning of transaction, some records (which are needed) are already locked, and then the transaction must wait to start until all the needed records are released. Another method is Deadlock Resolution in which DBMS takes its responsibility, to solve the deadlocked situations. Users don't need to take any action.

Encryption

Data encryption is a technique in which highly sensitive data is encoded (converted into unreadable form) before its storage or transmission over a network. The encoding method is kept tightly protected by the DBMS. The encoded data decoded (reverse process of encoding) for authenticated users only. Thus unauthorized users cannot read data and sensitive data is automatically encoded by DBMS. For example, in ATM system the pin code provided by the customer is encoded (encrypted) before its submission to the database server. A DBA can also manually encrypt data when needed.

Authentication schemes

Illegal access to computer resources is becoming a serious problem in the modern world. Passwords and usernames cannot identify the actual person who is logging on the computer system. Password can be leaked out or stolen therefore; it is not a secure method to block illegal access. Alternatively, some systems are using other authentication schemes for this purpose. These authentication schemes include signature dynamics, fingerprints and retina prints etc. Smart cards are normally used for the implementation of these schemes. For example, fingerprints are permanently stored on the smart card and whenever user wants to log in, he is required to insert his card into a card reader. He is also required to scan his fingerprints. Now if saved fingerprints on card and his actual fingerprints match with each other he is given access otherwise access is denied.

File organization is a technique for storing and arranging data on secondary storage devices so that it can be retrieved easily when needed. There are main three type of files from storage point of view.

Sequential Files

In sequential data files, records are stored on the storage media in a sequence. No locations are specified for individual records. The records are stored in an order, one after the other. Similarly, records are also retrieved in sequential order. It means that records are accessed one after the other in the same sequence in which they are stored on the storages devices. For example, to access a particular record from a data file, all records are searched one by one until the specified record in found. Therefore, accessing records in sequential files is very slow.

Direct or Random files

Direct files are also referred to as random files. In these files, records are not stored in a sequence. Each record is stored by specifying a particular address or location within a file. The address is calculated against the value of the key field of the record. Sometimes, the same address is calculated, which creates a problem to store record. This problem is known as synonym. Data accessing from direct files is very fast. A record is accessed directly by specifying its address.

Indexed Sequential Files

These files can be processed sequentially as well as randomly. In these files, the location of individual record is also stored along with data of record. For this purpose, an index is created to keep the track of locations of individual records.

Index refers to the location on the storage media where record is stored. You can say that an index is just like a table that is used to find out the location of a particular record. The key fields of the records are stored separately into the index along with the address of each record. Usually, an index is created in a new file called index file. The index file is updated whenever a new record is added or an existing record is deleted. Indexed file organization is more effective and fast in accessing data from data file than sequential file organization. These files occupy more space on the storage media but accessing speed of records is same as random access files.

Operational Maintenance

Once the database system is implemented, the operational maintenance phase of the database system begins. The operational maintenance is the process of monitoring and maintaining the database system. Maintenance includes activities such as adding new fields, changing the size of existing field, adding new tables, and so on. As the database system requirement change, it becomes necessary to add new tables or remove existing tables and to reorganize some files by changing primary access methods or by dropping old indexes and constructing new ones. It depends upon the size of backup file, when the size of database is large, recovery process may take a lot of time. There are two major types of complete recovery the database.

Backward Recovery

In backward Recovery the database is restored into the previous state and the unwanted changes are eliminated. It means that all changes made by various transactions are undone. For example, it will be equivalent to the state that was fifteen days before the failure. This sort of recovery is made when up to the time backup is not available or changes of previous period are needed to be undone.

Forward Recovery

It is also called Roll-forward. Changes of some failed transactions are applied to the database in order to roll it forward. Thus database becomes updated with all the changes confirmed.

Let's delve into some things I know first timers rarely, if ever, think of because they seem so basic.

Get to the Stage

After you have met the host and found out when you're up you need to check out some simple logistics like how to get up to the stage. If the room is crowded you may not be able to see where the steps to the stage are. Find the best path through the crowd and figure out where to step up (if necessary). They may begin timing your set as soon as you're introduced so you don't want to waste the first minute of it getting on stage.

If you plan on moving around for whatever reason then finding the parameters of the stage is a good idea too. Some are very small and you might walk right off the edge if the lights have disoriented you a bit. Sure, landing in somebody's lap while sending a table full of drinks flying will probably get a laugh but it's difficult to segue into the next joke easily once the front row is wet.

Work with the Microphone

The single most important yet overlooked aspect when going up for the first time is what you'll do with the microphone.

If you don't believe me, watch an open mic night that has a lot of rank beginners. Half the evening is spent watching them adjust the stand, taking the mic in and out of the holder and moving the stand around. It not only looks dumb but it can throw you off the second you get on stage. If you go up and the first thing you do is wrestle with the mic stand for thirty seconds you've just killed a huge chunk of your three-minute allotment. What's worse is you'll be thinking just that while you're adjusting it and the nervous energy will be compounded.

Make your decision about what you want to do with the mic before you go up. Here is the only decision you should make: in or out of the stand. Pick one and stick with it. If you want to leave it in, chances are it will be close enough in height to you unless you're very short or tall. If you need it adjusted, you can ask the host to do it during your introduction or get there early and learn how to do it on your own. It's best just to leave it alone.

If you decide to take it out, just quickly move the stand from out in front of you and leave the mic in your hand for the whole set. If you can't figure out how to get it back in the holder smoothly just leave in on the stool that will probably be on stage or hand it to the host when he returns. It looks ridiculous to see a new comic trying to take the mic in and out every thirty seconds. That pretty much becomes the entire focal point of the set for both the comic and the audience.

Pay attention to the comics on before you and see what the sound system is like. If you are first up then pay attention to the host. If it is a good mic and system then be careful not to get up and scream into an already well amplified mic (most clubs are a little lax about adjusting the sound). If the comics sound as if they are fading when moving slightly to the side of the mic then you have to make sure you speak directly into it. Contrary to what you may see other new comics do, this can be accomplished without swallowing the entire microphone.

Here's a big one: I don't care what you've seen on TV, don't ever intentionally drop the mic or swing it around by its cord. Club owners get mad when headliners abuse the equipment and they're very intolerant of open mic comics doing it.

It usually helps to use big paper and thin pens, so you can get a really crisp, thin outline. If you mess up the inking, you can clean it up with whiteout or by fixing it in Photoshop. Erase any extra pencil lines and get the inked outline as clean as possible. Scan the outline and load it into Photoshop. Make sure your outline is in RGB mode before you continue. To put your outline in RGB mode, go to the Image menu on the top bar, then Mode, and RGB Color. A lot of people like to keep the outline on the bottom of the picture, and then color on top using layers set to "Multiply". The major flaw in coloring this way is that you have no way to color the outline. Adding color to the outline can give your picture a nice touch. In order to do this, though, you have to make the outline transparent, which will allow you to color beneath it (just as if you put the outline on a sheet of transparency paper). Before you do anything, though, adjust the brightness and contrast of your image until the white areas are pure white and the black lines are dark black, but not pixelly. If you aren't careful and adjust the contrast too much, you'll end up with a jagged outline, as in the picture to leftmost picture. You do not want an outline this jagged and ugly; you want it to be as smooth and crisp as possible, so be careful. You will also want to go over sketchy areas, such as the eye in this picture, and clean up the lines a little bit. I'm usually not patient enough to do this too often, though. ^_^ Once you shrink down the image, flaws in your outline won't be as noticeable, anyway. http://www.animeextreme.com/julie/cg1.html (1 of 4) [3/7/2000 13:20:26] Photoshop Coloring Tips Now, in order to make your freshly cleaned outline transparent, first select the entire canvas. Copy the entire outline, and paste it into a layer by itself as shown to the left. You will then have two copies of your outline: the background layer, and Layer 1. Delete the background layer, and create a new blank, pure white background by going to the Layers menu, then to New Background. Next, go to the Channels menu on the floating layers window. Click the "Load Channel as Selection" button, which is the leftmost button that looks like a little dotted circle on the bottom of the menu. What this does is select all of the white areas on a picture, so you don't have to use the magic wand. Avoid using the magic wand at all costs! It can make some really sloppy selections. Don't worry, this is very easy to correct. :) Set Layer 1 to "Preserve Transparency" by checking the box on the Layers menu, as shown at the left. This layer will be for the skin (well, you can color whatever you like first, but I usually start off with the skin or hair). :) Most people use the magic wand tool to select an area to paint, but I have found the magic wand tool to be insufficient, and not very precise. Plus, you end up having several white areas around the lines that need to be filled in. Instead, use the polygonal lasso tool to select the areas that you want to color in. It takes a little longer, but works out best in the long run. You don't have to worry about holes in the outline or those annoying white areas around the lines. What you want to do is trace along the outlines of the region you are wanting to color. This can be difficult on larger complex regions, though, since once you start the selection you can't stop until you finish it. If you have the memory to spare, you may wish to keep an uncompressed version of your picture for future use (you may want to make prints or wallpapers out of it). Still, if you plan on posting your picture on the internet, you need to compress it and save it in either JPEG or GIF format. There is nothing more annoying than having to wait half an hour waiting to receive a 2 meg file that someone sent, because he or she didn't know how to properly compress the file. To shrink the file size down, go to the Layers Menu at the top menu bar, then go to "Flatten Image". This will flatten all the layers together. You cannot save in JPEG format unless you flatten the image. At this point, you may need to adjust the size of the image, too. Try not to make the picture any more than 800 pixels in either direction; it's best to have the picture fit on one screen. Next, just go to "save as", and select JPEG format from the pull down menu. When prompted, pick a compression rate to save it as. I recommend a compression rate of either 6 or 7, because it trims the file size down nicely without sacrificing too much quality. Tips : How To Make a Secret Hollow Book:

The first step into making the hollow book is to select a book. Make sure this is a book your own, and not one belonging to the library, or your family. I suggest rummaging through books at yard/garage sales.

Make sure it is a hardback; otherwise you will cut all the way through the other side when you are cutting out the insides.
You'll also need:

Elmer's white glue
a container to hold glue solution (I've chosen a film canister)
X-acto knife, and/or box cutter. Both if you have them
brush to apply glue solution
pencil/pen
ruler, or other rigid straight edge

Select a page that you want to be the first one cut out, and save that page to be cut out at the end. (I'll explain later) Even if you don't want to save any pages at the beginning of the book, you must set one aside for a later step.

Mix a solution of white glue and water. Just enough for the glue to be runny, and absorbed by the edge of the book's pages. 50% to 70% glue (30% to 50% water) worked well for me. - Half a film canister full was enough for this book.

Holding the remaining pages together, brush the edges with the glue solution - enough to soak in pretty well, but not too drippy.

Allow this to dry, but use a spacer so the first couple pages, and the front cover don't get stuck. I spaced mine with post-it notes, and used some old hard disk platters to apply pressure. It dries quickly- about 15 to 30 min

When dry, open the book to the first glued page.

Draw out a half-inch boarder around the edge on all four sides. (Don't forget along the spine too.)

Using a strait edge and knife, cut out along the inside of the line. Try to make the cut as vertical as possible, or else try to tilt so the hole will narrow as you go down.

Continue cutting down through the layers. I found that a box cutter was easier to keep straight. This part takes a long time. I recommend listening to music while you work. Watching TV though could be distracting, and you could also cut a page out of your finger. (no, I didn't.)

The longer you spend on it, the smoother and straighter the inside edges of your book will be. My first attempts at this yielded rough edges, but the fuzz flattens down a little when glued (later).

After a while, you can store some of your tools in it while you take breaks. I did this book in 2 evenings.

When you get to the back of the book, and through the last page, stop. Dump out all the little paper fuzz that inevitably comes from the cutting.

Next, brush the glue solution on the inside edges of the pages. Give it a bit to soak in. A little bit of drippiness is okay, as the glue dries clear. This is also a good time to apply a second coat to the outside of the pages with the excess glue.

Brush the rim of the book with a light coat of glue. This will affix it to that one page we saved earlier (and will cut through later).

Close the book again, this time without any spacers. Give it another 15-30 minutes to dry. Clean up any glue that drips on your desk, like it did mine.

Remember that first page we saved? It?s now glued to the rest of the book. Lets all turn there now.

Cut through this first page with your knife to open it. The insides of the book may still be a little gooey since there was no air inside to let it dry. -So let it dry now.

When it?s dry, you're done!

Fill it with whatever treasured items (or contraband) you choose.

All of this has been mentioned before here, but I couldn't find a beginners post like this so I thought I'd quickly put one together. I'm sure there's inaccuracies in here, so feel free to pull me up on them (because it will make it more useful for anybody just starting out with adwords and keep me from talking bull) and add your own beginners tips.

1.Don't use broad matching

At least not to start off with. What's broad matching? From the horse's mouth:

“If you include general keyword or keyword phrases-such as tennis shoes-in your keyword list, your ads will appear when users search for tennis and shoes, in any order, and possibly along with other terms.”

With expanded matching it becomes even harder to know when your keywords will show, because Google will pick them algorithmically.

Broad match is usually used by experienced advertisers looking to save time (usually with a long list of negative keywords) or by lazy advertisers, who may not have the time or the inclination to target their campaigns. Broad matching can also be the right way to go for parts of certain kinds of campaign, but wading straight into it can be dangerous.

2.Use dynamic titles

Dynamic titles are easy, they don't cost anything and they usually have a good effect on CTR and conversion rates. The phrase that the searcher uses in their search will come up as the the title of your adword. This saves you having to create an individual ad for each keyword and means that your ad will be more targeted. In the title field of your ad simply put {keyword:your backup title here}. The backup title is in case the search phrase is too long for the title field or if adwords can't display the search for some other reason.

3.Use global negatives

If you're selling something, you don't want people finding your ad if they're searching for free stuff. This sounds obvious, but do some searches and you'll see it happening. Use the word 'free' in your campaign global negatives. You can also use this for other words you don't want to turn up for. Using negative keywords is especially important if you're using broad matching.

4.Turn off content targeting and search network

Do you know where to look at these ads? No. Leave them alone until you feel confident that you know where they'll be showing and that you can make them work – get comfortable with Google first. Conversion rates and CTR's change dramatically for each search property, not to mention content targeted ads. Get acquainted with Google before you move on to the others.

5.Test different creatives and positions

How much of a difference will being in the first position, as opposed to the second, third or sixth position make, for your net profit? The answer is that it depends on your creative, industry and who else is bidding on your keywords. The bottom line is that you should know. Test your creative in each position and work out where it will be most effective, from an ROI point of view. Remember also that the adwords ranking algo works on a CPCxCTR basis (it's actually more complicated than that, but that gives an idea as to why out of two ads with similar CPC's, one will be higher because of a higher CTR)

You can also test your creatives. Write 5 or 6 different ads and set them to run evenly (Google will run the one which preforms best by default, but you can set them to run evenly in your campaign settings). The creative which gives you the highest ROI is the one you should go with. You should probably run this kind of test for more than just a day.

6.Optimise your landing page

The landing page is the page which the person who clicked on your ad will see when they come through to your site. Don't use your homepage as your landing page unless it deals only with selling the product you're advertising. For instance, if you're selling posters, have a landing page for 'flower' posters and a landing page for 'car'. You can even go one better and have a landing page for each poster – so you'll have a page for 'sunflower posters' and 'bmw 5 series posters'.

7. Optimise your creatives

Optimising creatives is another topic entirely – but there are some easy wins (depending on, again, the strategy being appropriate for your campaign): one, for example, is using a keyword specific url. If you're selling Nike AirWalk shoes you might want to set the URL on your creative to display as: www.example.com/nike/nike-airwalk. Keep in mind that this has no relation to the real click through URL – but it looks better than your domain name – and certainly better than a long line of numbers. Keep this relevant however, because otherwise you could cheese people off if they don't find what they're looking for.

Another easy win is to not include superlatives, like 'world's best' and 'most loved product' or ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. Google will just disapprove them. If you do mention a price or something else (like: the UK's best selling mobile phone) then you must back that up on the landing page for the ad.

One of the most important things to remember that the ad copy is one of the most crucial things for making people click through. This sounds obvious, but there are a lot of very bad creatives out there.

8. Track conversion and ROI (Return On Investment)

Track everything. Google will track impressions, clicks and click through rate. Just because an ad has a high CTR doesn't mean that it is making you money! You can use Google's own conversion tracking codes, or you can use your own software. If you don't know how each keyword is preforming – then you won't be able to optimise your campaigns, by turning off the keywords that aren't working and investing more in the keywords which are.

9. Work out your CPA (Cost Per Acquisition)

How much is each sale costing you? Are your Google adwords listings preforming as well as your Overture listings? Your SiteMatch listings? Your offline marketing? You should know how much you're paying for each order/sale/download/enquiry/whatever on each channel – only then will you be able to set CPA targets to work towards and know which channel is best for you.

10. Don't enter into bidding wars

It is easy to get into bidding wars with your competitors. You want to be number one and so does your competitor. The best thing to do is to take a step back, ten deep breaths and consider how important it really is to be in the number one spot. If you can justify it, fine but otherwise: let your competitor be number one, slot into the number two slot and wait. If you have a better product, your clickthrough rate will get you to the top – and you'll still be paying the same as you were in the second position.

More and more people are using automated bidding software. This software will update at a set interval to keep the ad in the desired position. Doing battle with this kind of software is even more frustrating and less rewarding than trying to outbid a competitor.

11. Set a weekly budget and stick to it

When you're first starting out this is really important. adwords is addictive, and like anything else addictive, it can quickly get out of hand. A keyword may convert like nobody's business one day and die the next. Make sure you know a keyword is working (more importantly, know why it is working) before you invest more.

12. Geotarget

Geotarget your ads to the relevant audience. It can be done when you set up a new campaign and in your campaign settings. If you want to show on .com that's fine, but remember that you can geotarget to individual countries and even cities (you can target regions in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and the Netherlands). The more targeted users feels that your ad is, the more likely they are to click on it.

13. Organise your campaigns into adgroups

This will make it easier for you to know what is doing well and what isn't – especially a year later. If you're selling shoes have a campaign not just for running shoes, but for Nike, and then an adgroup for each Nike model.

14.Keep a close eye on your competitors

Is your competitor doing something better than you? What keywords do you share with your competitors? Can you discern their strategy? Do they use automated bidding software? Do their landing pages have some magic which you should be emulating? This is the sort of stuff you can find out and the kind of stuff that you need to know.

In addition to the above techniques of qualification, you can also list which words you do not want in the query. if you did not want the word "free" in the search you would put -free at the end of your keywords list, or set your negative keywords at the campaign level.

QUESTION: Do I need an objective? I need to do my resume, but I am not sure what kind of job I want. Do I need one? My friend who used to be my supervisor in my old job told me that I do not. Is she right?

ANSWER: There are many opinions on the subject. However, it is better to be safe than sorry. Either use the same resume with different objectives on each to show career focus. Or, indicate that you are seeking a position in a certain area, followed by "titles of interest include project manager, field service technician, and crew supervisor."

Many job seekers choose to leave off an objective to avoid limiting themselves to one position. By leaving the decision to an employer, your resume might get tossed. Remember, listing your objective is the courteous thing to do. It saves a hiring manager a lot of time by taking the guesswork out of deciding what you want to do.

Mention what you can do for an employer, not what the employer can do for you. Avoid writing: "Seeking a position utilizing my experience, skills and education offering career growth potential." Instead, write: "Seeking a position in sales or customer service where five years of related experience in pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries will be of value."

QUESTION: How do I put my resume on the Internet?

ANSWER: Many companies and job banks require that you fill out an on-line form or paste an ASCII version of your resume. Few will accept an email attachment. Copy and paste your resume into the "Paste Here" box on most job search sites or send an attachment if it is an option. In either case, you will need to set up an account providing a user name and password.

QUESTION: How do I create a plain text resume?

ANSWER: Many companies and job banks require a plain text or ASCII resume. This format is void of all formatting. But, there are lots of tricks to jazz it up.

Perform the Save As function to convert your formatted resume to a text file. You will be prompted that your resume will lose all formatting. Choose OK. You will now have a plain text version of your resume. You must rearrange the information if it becomes disorganized.

QUESTION: Should I bring my cover letter to the interview?
ANSWER: Do not bring your cover letter. Its purpose is to introduce you in your absence, communicate your interest in a position or company, highlight your experience, explain your situation, and request an interview.

However, do bring prints of your resume to the interview. Before the interview begins, announce, "Here are prints of my resume. I thought you might want to have them." That way the manager will have a good print to review, and to pass onto other managers, just in case he or she only has a faxed copy. QUESTION: What should I do after the interview?

If the company does not contact you in more than a week, send a follow up letter to remind them of your interest in the position. You can learn enough about the business of writing to go on and completely write your next book on your own. Ghostwriters provide guidance and assistance that can bring your creative talent to fruition.

Remember, it is your story, your expertise in the subject and your message that is being written. The ghostwriter adds his or her writing expertise to help you communicate your message. Of course, the writer is a skilled artist who can create as much of this for you as you wish...and that is the key. How much of the details are important to you, and how much do you want the author to fill in. The more specific you are about anything important to you, the better job the writer will do delivering precisely the book you would have written yourself – your very own manuscript!

The author and ghostwriter, after discussing the state of the information and the expectations of the author, will agree on the work that is to be performed, resulting in a written contract that specifies some or all of the following:
Nature and/or scope of project (book, article, novel, series, etc.)
Length of completed manuscript (usually between 40,000 and 100,000 words)
Choice of genre (fiction v. non-fiction, etc.)
Intended audience, i.e., adult, youth, Christian, business, etc.
Specific tasks to be performed related to the project, such as interviews, research, surveys, graphs and charts, etc.
Estimated due-date of first draft and final product (if more than one draft).
Payment terms and rates.
Author’s rights, i.e., acknowledgement of ghostwriter, copy of work for ghostwriter, rights and royalties, etc.

An author may want to guide the process carefully and closely from the starting point. Or the author may choose to relinquish control to the ghostwriter, claiming sole authorship by the project’s conclusion. Most agreements fall somewhere between these two extremes, but it is the author's responsibility to make sure the project is proceeding along the lines he or she wants. It should also be remembered that the timeline is always an estimate, because the author might choose to delay things while considering options and direction. This is critical if the author is going to ensure his own satisfaction of the completed manuscript.

When you are ready to consult a ghostwriter, you have two options. You can hire one yourself, which means doing a lot of research into prices, services, and credentials. Ask about a free consultation with the ghostwriter, and you may wish to request published samples of the writer’s work.
